Wifi connection troubleshooting

Tip 1 - Trinity desktop:
Use built-in TDE wifi manager
Right click on the network manager icon in system tray > edit connections > select wireless connection > click edit connection button > go through all steps of the guide and enter proper values > until you get to the check box that says "Automatically Connect" > then click "Connect and Save".

Tip 2 - Plasma, Trinity and other desktops:
Use desktop environment independent tool "nmtui"
Another way is to use terminal tool "nmtui", what is desktop environment independent. So run in any terminal:
$ nmtui
and setup your wifi

Tip 3 - Trinity desktop:
Install external advanced network manager applet
- Install from repositories:
$ sudo apt install network-manager-applet
- Reboot
- Run:
$ nm-applet
- Find network manager applet in the system tray > right click > configure > configure desired networks

Tip 4 - Request a help on the forum:
If you request a wifi related help, it would be appropriate to provide output of the following terminal command:
$ inxi -SMCGxn
Moreover, you should provide debug info as described here https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

Might I suggest that for ANY wifi connection issue it is mandatory for the user to provide the output of inxi -SMCGxn before it is answered.
Without that one has no idea what sort of can of worms one is dealing with.

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

I am new to Q4os so excuse me if I sound uninformed.  I am trying to set up aan Archer T2U plus usb adator for Wifi.  I cannot find out how to enable it.  The install disc does not execute at start up.  It may be set for Windows or Mac.  I know it can be configured for Mint linx or Ubuntu.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

Driver support for this device in Debian is a mixed bag, but take a look at this and read it all the way through,

https://docs.alfa.com.tw/Support/Linux/RTL8812AU/

To be honest youd be better off getting another device that has native Linux support as this product clearly states it doesnt support Linux.

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

Noob's question...
At https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c … .html#ID10

"Speed up your wireless internet by disabling the WiFi power management"

Can it use in Q4OS TDE?

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

Use iwconfig and see whether your wifi chipset power management is on/ off or doesnt show anything. You really should post this question in a separate thread for better visibility. It should work but is it really necessary?

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

I am also new to Q4OS.
The system was running great until I installed Proton VPN.
The WIFI is now disabled, but the wired connection (enp0s25) is okay.
I tried the Edit connections, but no change.
I tried nmtui, but no change.

I also lost the setup for firefox and thunderbird, but I have reinstalled okay.
I tried to find the ProtonVPN package with Synaptic to remove it, but ProtonVPN  was not found.
The WIFI New connection menu shows 2 Unknown connections (wlp3s0) (enp0s25) and a VPN connection.
The WIFI deactivate menu shows a connection called lo and won't respond to enable WIFI.
The notification settings shown a VPN banner notification, a VPN connection attempt failed
and a wireless network disappeared.
The wireless connection (wlp3s0) is disabled.

Thx

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

#6:
Crosscourt, this system has been working for several montessori exactly as is.  The only difference is I now installed it on
another, similar ssd. Apart from that everything is the same.
One more thing could be that the very reson for the reinstallation was that q4os stopped working entirely and I could not get it going.
Reinstalling was the final attempt I came up with. So it is of course possible some hardware gave in.

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

Q4os team:
Hope you can see this relaterad to the correct post....
I received a response to my not being able to open wireless wifi.
One suggestion was to run nmtui and then setup  your wifi. I did that,  so now I have
a box "nmtui ‐- Konsole".  There I can see my wireless connection but not activate it ?

There is profile name,
SSID (password ?),
BsSID  ??? Some numbers
IPv4-config -automatic
Ipv6    same thing

Connect automatically and for everyone are both ticked.

Not very clear but I installed it in swedish, which was a  mistake.
This looks good, but how do I confirm or activate it ?
  This is actually the first confirmation of a wireless connection but, again, it wont run.
Not able to copy computer data, but my distro is q4os 6.5.1 - deb 13u1 (Andromeda)
Kennel is 6.12.69 + deb13-amd64

Not very clear I know.....

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

Reading #13 I have another comment (yes, I am answering my own post....)
  I just remembered my previous q4os installation, a few months ago.  That one connected wifi on the spot, with the same usb unit I am trying to use now.
  My present installation is somewhat different,  more code to start up. (I know, it's called progress...)
  Is it possible my wifi unit Is simply outdated, and a newer one Is needed ?
  If so, where can I find a previous version ?
  A new route, yes, but this system is a bit limited w/o wifi

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

Check first that
- the SSID (Service Set IDentifier) in your WiFi config matches the SSID of your WiFi router (often written on a label present on the router);
- the BSSID is empty;
- the mode is "Infrastructure";
- the security mode matches the one required by your router (often WPA / WPA2);
- the password is correct
- you are not out of range of your WiFi router.

If it still not works, please describe what "I received a response to my not being able to open wireless wifi" means (your post #13); give the exact error message if there was one.

Also please also specify which desktop (Plasma / Trinity) you are using; they have GUI to configure WiFi but they are different. Don't hesitate to attach screenshots of each tab in your WiFi config to show the exact values and choices that are cofigured.

As I understand your last post, you are using an USB WiFi dongle, correct? Are you sure it hasn't been damaged since the last time you used it  and the connectors are clean and in good state? And what are the exact references of you device? Without that info, nobody can give any advice on drivers.

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

Hchiper,
#13 was just referring to my earlier error description: "not being able to open wireless wifi" .
I have the settings you mentioned, but see no trace of life. Lacking wifi, providing screen shots is difficult, you have to trust me....
  I can add my system info, DebianGNU/Linux 13, KDE Plasma Version 6.3.6, Frameworks Version 6.13.0

Still in the dark about this, the only good sign is that it worked ok during installation...

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

Hchiper, another comment:
   My Hardware info shows, under Network, Device 2: Realtid RTL8188SU 802.11n WLAN Adapter driver:N/A type: USB rev:2.0.........
  So it appears to be seen by the system.

Re: Wifi connection troubleshooting

From the answers and information you give in your two previous posts, the only advice I can give is to check that the package "firmware-realtek" is installed: see the result of

apt list firmware-realtek
