Re: installed Q4 OS on dell 3120 chromebook. out of disk space

It seems the detected storage is a 14.68 GiB "Hynix HAG2e" and it seems to be a removable one.
Beside an EFI partition used to boot, it has a main partition of 13.07 GiB, of which 92.9% is used.
Obviously, no 64 GB SSD is detected. Is it really present inside your laptop and correctly inserted?
Do you really have an external storage (like an SD card)?

Re: installed Q4 OS on dell 3120 chromebook. out of disk space

Here are the specs
The Dell Chromebook 3120 (and 2-in-1) is a durable 11.6-inch laptop built primarily for students. It features an Intel Processor N100, up to 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and up to 64GB of eMMC storage. It boasts Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and automatic Chrome OS updates

The 64 gig ssd is in the laptop. It was running as a chromebook. I used Mr chromebook to flash the system board to be able to run a new OS.

It seems, there is no 64G drive in your computer, or it's not detected. Check your Bios please.

Re: installed Q4 OS on dell 3120 chromebook. out of disk space

It's in the bios. The only disk is the 64gb ssd. Seems when it installed it created only 14gb partition on the ssd. The os was an iso image that was created on a 16gb usb thumb drive. That looks like what it created a small 16 gb disk .

Re: installed Q4 OS on dell 3120 chromebook. out of disk space

From a question to IA, it appears that

  • "The lower capacity is likely due to ChromeOS's complex, hidden recovery partitions, unallocated space, or binary prefix miscalculations."

  • "Chromebook motherboards and firmware don't always flag internal soldered eMMC or NVMe drives as "system internal". If the OS kernel detects a hot-plug capable connection or reads the port as eSATA, it automatically categorizes the drive as removable."

I don't know why inxi doesn't report those partitions (provided they really exist).
You can try to install Gparted from the Software Centre and see if it detects more partitions.
Do you remember what choice you made for disk usage when you installed Q4OS? (the full disk? a partition?) I think the best choice would be to use the full disk (erasing everything, included the ChromeOS recovery partition), but in this case you'll loose all the data stored on your drive and you'll never be able to reinstall ChromeOS.

Thanks @hchiper. Also try to run in terminal:

and post the output here.

Re: installed Q4 OS on dell 3120 chromebook. out of disk space

I asked other questions to IA today, and it appears that the situation is worse than I believed : Chromebooks are protected against installation of other OS.
This article can be interesting: https://saagarjha.com/blog/2019/03/13/d … entary-os/

Edit

One step further with IA.

Q: Is it possible to erase all the partitions on a Chromebook eMMC to retrieve the full storage in order to install Linux?

A: Yes, it is entirely possible to wipe all partitions on a Chromebook's eMMC and reclaim the full storage for a native Linux installation.

However, because Chromebooks use highly specialized firmware and partition layouts, you will need to take specific steps to format the drive and allow the system to boot.

For tips on how to properly set up a live USB and launch the necessary scripts to modify your Chromebook's bootloader:
Installing Linux Mint on a Chromebook – Full Tutorial

1. Reclaim the Full Storage

When installing a standalone Linux distribution (like Ubuntu, Debian, or Linux Mint), the Linux installer will guide you through the partitioning process. You simply choose the "Erase disk and install" (or similar) option in your Linux installer. This will completely delete the ChromeOS kernel and stateful partitions, merging all unallocated space into a single usable drive.

2. Bypass Chromebook Firmware (Required)

Unlike standard PCs, Chromebooks have write-protected firmware designed exclusively to boot ChromeOS. To actually run a standard Linux OS directly from your eMMC, you cannot simply wipe the drive; you must also alter the boot firmware.

Developer Mode: You will first need to enter Developer Mode.

Firmware Script: You must replace or modify the firmware using the MrChromebox Firmware Utility Script, which enables Legacy Booting (RW_LEGACY) or Full UEFI.

Write Protect: Depending on your Chromebook's model and age, you may need to temporarily remove a physical write-protect screw or disconnect the battery to flash the new firmware.

3. Install Linux

Create a bootable USB drive with your chosen Linux distribution using a tool like Rufus or BalenaEtcher.
Boot your Chromebook into the Live Linux USB environment.
Run the installer, wipe the internal eMMC disk entirely, and install Linux.
