The desktop trash icon always shows empty even if there are files contained in the trash. Is there a way to have the icon change to show that there are files in the trash?

I deleted Trash folder in /.local/share and that fixed it. Trash icon now changes full/empty.

Well, that should work with crystalsvg icons. Please perform a simple test.
- right click on the trash icon > empty trash bin.
- paste a screenshot of trash bin here
- create a testing file using konqueror
- paste a second screenshot
- double click on the trash icon and check the file is really there
Post back the result.

We are not able to reproduce the issue. How exactly do you "move text file to trash" ? Please specify step by step so we can reproduce the way.
Moreover please take another test.
- Open "My Documents" shortcut on the Desktop
- Right click on the space > create new > text file
- Select the new file
- Press "Delete" key and confirm
- Check the trash status
And another one. Create a new testing user and test trash bin within new user's session.

Similar issue, the trash icon shows empty even if i have files inside it.
Cause in my case: using other apps like thunar which uses gvfs-trash protocol instead of trinity's (kio-trinity?) protocol
