Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

@judydudi

Thanks for the logs.

The Xorg log seems to end well, only not being able to detect your mouse, but it is the same in my case. A "xorg.conf.new" file should have been created in "/home/<username>" after executing the "Xorg" command (if you executed the command without root). Can you share the contents of that file?

To use the file execute the following command and then reboot to see what happens:

sudo cp /home/<username>/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Remember to replace "<username>" with your username.

@judydudi
Could you post the exact change you made to get the system working properly ? Anyway, thanks for reporting and sharing the result.

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

@q4osteam:

i did a fresh install with 4.8.
System boots still at reboot in prompt.

i did

sudo Xorg -configure
sudo cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo reboot

If there is anything else I can do to fully understand the issue, please let me know.
many thanks for the support.

It seems Xorg couldn't load proper configuration automatically for some reason, probably bug. Plymouth likely helped some way to configure video drivers. If you provide Xorg.0.log and journal.log of the fixed system, we will check them and try to figure out the exact cause of the issue.

Would you also post the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file ?

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

We have 3 different situations:
1. The original system - uses KMS video driver - failed to start Xorg server and thus Trinity display manager
2. Plymouth installed - uses KMS video driver - Xorg starts fine
3. Xorg configuration file generated - uses Intel video driver as ordered by config file - Xorg starts fine

Ad1. We are still not sure, but seems systemd loads video modules too late for Xorg server to start properly.
Ad2. Plymouth likely helps systemd to load needed KMS video modules and drivers more early, probably inside initramfs, so Xorg server manages to start.
Ad3. System is pre-configured to make use of Intel driver, so the initialization goes quite differently

In any way, in first two cases system uses KMS video driver while in the third case, system uses Intel driver, so the initialization goes quite differently.
Unfortunately, we cannot do experimenting on the target hardware yet, so the only way is to read information from the log files. We will continue to try to find out the exact reason of this issue.

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

After investigation and thorough log files checking, we can conclude this hardware dependent issue is not a native Q4OS issue, rather kernel or Debian one. We will continue to investigate it as soon as we get the relevant hardware for testing, although it could take a time. As the investigation would reopen, we will post a feedback.

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

I had the same issue when trying to install Q4OS Centaurus Trinity release to my Asus Laptop. Before, I had Gemini but I thought  "what the heck, I don't need this latest release, better off with a lighter release". However, after had I installed Centaurus Trinity, I was directed to command shell prompt at the beginning and after entering pasword, I was left with the black screen of text mode. I tried to install Centaurus Plazma, again, no luck. I arrived the conclusion that those Centaurus releases were somehow not competible with Intel Graphic Card in my Asus Laptop. Again, what do I know, I am just a newbie.

Interesting enough, when I tried to install Debian Buster release from Debian website, it did not recognise neither my ethernet card, nor wifi card.

Linux Mint does not even move beyond Grup menu (!!!)

Finally I installed Gemini Plazma release and everything is shiny and pefect now.
