Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

Hello

I installed q4os using the "easy" method.
I am taken to command prompt. There I enter username/pwd, then type startx to start the TDE.
Any method to get GUI login directly?
This is urgent, since teamviewer works only when login is via GUI.

Thx.

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

I installed sddm and now I get GUI login prompt. TV also works correctly. Perhaps sddm needs to be installed by default rather than tde.

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

We will take a closer look on the issue reported within this topic. Anyway it seems to be hardware dependent, as we are not able to reproduce that in a VM nor within our testing hardware.

@schnappi, judydudi
Please describe, what was the exact way you installed Q4OS ?

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

According to our investigations, "haveged" package may be needed for some hardware configurations to be able to run display manager. Just install haveged in terminal:
$ sudo apt install haveged
and reboot.

If anyone could confirm such finding please post here.

Can you share the output of this command before executing startx?

systemctl get-default

Ok.

Try running in your computer:

sudo systemctl enable tdm.service

Then restart.

if no changes see: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Displa … ay_manager

As a non very good workaround you can add:

exec startx

at the end of your ".profile" file located in your home folder (it is a hidden file).

You will have to enter your username and password on terminal mode but as soon as you enter them, startx will be executed automatically so you don't have to.

Cheers.

@judydudi
We are still investigating this issue. Please provide the "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" log file.

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

I don't know if this is relevant but as it seems as an issue with your graphic card you might want follow what it is said in this page for an "Intel" graphic card --> https://wiki.debian.org/GraphicsCard

Also this thread might be related to the issue --> https://unix.stackexchange.com/question … artx-fails

Cheers.

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

@judydudi
We have checked all the log files thoroughly. The most notable is that first Xorg.0.log shows kernel "5.10.0-12-amd64" while the second shows "5.10.0-13-amd64". According to the second log, "DRM" module loads properly while failed in the first case. So it's possible the kernel update could be the fix in your case. Anyway, a new updated Gemini live media release is around the corner so this issue should be fixed soon.

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

Can you also share the outputs of these commands (without plymouth installed)?:

lspci -knn
dmesg

Try making a "xorg.conf" file with:

Xorg -configure

and paste the output of the file here (should be located, if executing without root, on "/home/<username>"). If the command throws any errors paste them as well. Sorry for all the info requests smile

Maybe more information can be extracted from those lines.

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

@judydudi
It would be helpful for us, if you could attach "journalctl" log for both, tdm ok and tdm failed system for comparison. You could send them via e-mail too. You get logs this way:
$ sudo journalctl > /tmp/journalctl.log
and pick the "/tmp/journalctl.log" file

Re: Starting the laptop takes me to command prompt

The logs shows that Plymouth starts DRM module just early in initramfs, while systemd of the failing system starts it too late for Xorg server to initialize. You could try to add DRM module into initramfs manually and see what happens. Do the following:

1. Edit file "/etc/initramfs-tools/modules" and add a simple line "drm" at the end of file.

2. Run in terminal:
sudo update-initramfs -u

3. Reboot the system

Please post the result here.
If these instructions fix the issue, we could clearly conclude and report Debian, or Debian's upstream systemd/kernel bug.
