Ubuntu Quark 20.04

We have released a brand new experimental operating system image based on Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa. It features Plasma 5.18 LTS desktop and Q4OS amenities. Anyone is welcome to download and test the image, feel free to report any experience here. If a public response will be positive, this OS might become a fully independent OS with its own repositories, versioning and no direct binding to Q4OS.

Download:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/files/testing/
File:
ubuntu-quark-1.0-x64-testing.rx.iso

The current working name is "Ubuntu Quark 20.04", however a final official name isn't determined yet. We accept any community suggestions, please post them here.

Unlike Q4OS, Quark is based on Ubuntu. The official Q4OS edition will always be based on Debian.

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

Quark is probably not a good choice for a name; it might be confused with this: http://www.quark.com/

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

I think q4buntu would work well!

Done a quick live test and it seems OK. There are various bits of software I use that are just not available for Debian and I have been fiddling with using the Ubuntu Trinity build but this looks like a great way to go. It's the little extra Q4OS touches that make all the difference!

I hope this does go on to a live project.

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

Thanks, however a completely different name would be also possible, something such like Redhat vs. Fedora.

A simple search for each, along with os, generates the following hits:

Well, I wouldn't recommend Quagmire OS!
Altho, there are no matches from a search.

I would love to see this become an independent OS depending how its handled may attract a fair number of users.

Okay, on a more serious note.
Sticking with the Q first letter -
How about Quick OS - didn't find anything with a quick (pun not intended) search.

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

Just call it Qubuntu, which will attract many Ubuntu users.

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

So, here's my question.

What does this offer that neither Kubuntu, Neon, nor Feren already offer?  Because that's 3 KDE distro's already based on Ubuntu.  And while different strokes for different folks is fine, what's going to make this stand out when Neon is literally the KDE Developers distro and so will probably always have a more updated plasma desktop than than this, and Feren builds on mint with their attempts at making it easier for a novice user...

@tlmiller76
1. Stability, unlike Neon
2. Q4OS repositories and tools, at the first place the Desktop profiler and Plasma customization
3. Trinity desktop option - will be enabled later

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

Same thing was said about the Q4OS KDE Debian version as to why bother with it.but the Q4OS amenities and easier install are worth it.

Agree with Q4OS  team as Neon isnt as stable as my other KDE distros and I like the Q4OS amenities and tools. It also offers to those whom still like TDE the ability to easily move back and forth to KDE.
Kubuntu has issues and has had issues for awhile which is why I dont use it. Feren is one of the nicer Ubuntu  based KDE distros around.
It would be nice to be able to run TDE/Debian and Ubuntu versions from the same source for support.

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

I guess it depends upon what you're comparing it to.  Neon is rock solid stable compared to Kubuntu...  Sure, it's not as stable as Debian, but then, it's also nowhere near as old and mouldy a version that's avaialble in Debian, and has so many more features at this point it's ridiculous.  I just don't get with so many KDE distro's based on Ubuntu already, what would attract users to YET ANOTHER one.

The q4os repositories are fine and all, but there's really not THAT much there.  Unless you're planning on running a newer version of KDE than is avaialble in the default Ubuntu repos?

Trinity would make it worthwhile for that, since there's currently no (active) distro that offers Trinity on Ubuntu (that I'm aware of).

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

Did a complete install with Quark and used the full desktop profile and having no issues whatsoever. Ive got it installed on a Dell E6420 laptop with a 128gb ssd. Ill continue using it for a bit and report back with anything I see thats an issue but really good so far. 377mb resource usage at gui so no complaints. No unusual errors that I typically see with Kubuntu. Q4OS software center was fine.

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

If all you want is TDE a good option but many may want to move back and forth between KDE and TDE, and to my knowledge there is no present distro that does that other than Q4OS.

We are working to improve the Q4OS "Desktop profiler" tool to make possible to create custom profiles in an easy way, use local, as well as remote profiles and other interesting features. Such features in conjuction with other Q4OS tools could attract a few users, we believe.

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

That would definitely attract users and honestly there isnt a huge number of native Ubuntu based KDE distros. Theres room for a feature filled Q4OS version.

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

This definately intrigued me. I like LTS distros and gravitate in that direction. I was fond of Kubuntu 18.04 which had the last LTS version of KDE.

Unfortunately my trusty Thinkpad X220 developed motherboard issues and does not run reliably enough to use. That leaves me in the odd position of not owning any x86/x64 based hardware to try out this new Ubuntu Quark.

Re: Ubuntu Quark 20.04

So far Ive used it all day at work and last night with no issues. Very stable, no bugs and after trying quite a few apps, multimedia and online use its working very well. No issues with updating and even Discover which can have issues at times is working fine even though I prefer using Muon or Synaptic instead.
