Problem with Sound output

Today I went to use my notebook, and I realized that I was not getting any audio out of it. Hence I tried to use the documentation instructions available at https://q4os.org/dqa011.html#install.3 , and it also did not work. Then I did the opposite that the documentation suggested - uninstalled the pavucontrol-qt and pulseaudio packages. So I ran the command "$ artsshell terminate && aplay /opt/trinity/share/sounds/KDE_Startup.wav" and the audio returned to work.

Is it okay to continue using the system without these packages? Or should I install them again?

Re: Problem with Sound output

I must admit it is unusual for sound problems to be solved this way round, normally installing Pulse solves most of the issues. However, one thing you learn very quickly with linux is that sometimes you have to think outside the box!

You may want to check that other audio stuff still works - MP3, Audio in your Browser, Video etc.

It would be of interest to have a bit more information about your machine. The best way to provide this would be for you to install a bit of software called inxi

sudo apt-get install inxi

then

inxi -F

Use your mouse to select all the output in Konsole, right click > Copy and then Paste the output into a response to this thread.

With Pulse installed, you can actually switch between Pulse and Alsa using the Mixer. IF Pulse is installed then the Mixer window has a drop down list on the top right. The other thing to check with Pulse is in pavucontrol make sure nothing is muted.

You should keep them installed definitely. We would recommend you to run 'pavucontrol-qt' and double check output mixer levels on the 'Output Devices' tab.

Re: Problem with Sound output

The audio was working in TDE, but when I switched to XFCE it stopped again. So I installed KMix and it returned to work again.

But I will install it again now.

Re: Problem with Sound output

Again the sound stopped. -_-

The 'Output Devices' in Pavucontrol doesn't recognize my hardware. hmm It only shows me this option '"Fake Output"'

Neither Kmix is working anymore. The system simply stops recognizing the sound card. :'(

Re: Problem with Sound output

Your posted image would suggest you have installed some KDE packages rather than their TDE equivalents, I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make if you install the kmix-trinity package instead of just kmix...

Re: Problem with Sound output

I don't know why even in TDE, the sound with Pulseaudio installed isn't working. hmm

In TDE the Kmix even recognizes the hardware, but still no audio comes out. But now I noticed one thing: it was not to have, in that Kmix dropdown menu that is in the image, the alsamixer option?

I have not uninstalled it, and if I run alsamixer on the terminal it works. But was not he supposed to show up there, too? Is the problem in this?

Re: Problem with Sound output

I think I found where the problem is. In TDE Control Center, these are the sound devices that are appearing to me to choose.

(In my opinion) it is as if the system was sending the audio through an audio device (ALSA or OSS), and Kmix controlling the volume level of another device (PulseAudio or HD Intel PCH). The two should be defined in the same option, right?

The problem is, how do I do it?

When I was with Pulseaudio and Pavucontrol-qt uninstalled, in Kmix there was only the "Default" option in the dropdown menu.

Re: Problem with Sound output

I have noticed on my machine there are times when the only way to get sound working was to go to pavucontrol and unmute some settings there, I have re-installed since then though so cannot go back and check what they were...

You kmix image looks the same as mine and if you select the "PulseAudio" option it should show just the "Master" volume slider, make sure this is not muted and then you can return to the "HDA Intel PCH" settings to make sure nothing is muted there either and then chek your sound is working again.

If this does not get your sound working you could try re-installing pavucontrol and go through the settings there to ensure nothing is muted and that sound is being sent through to the device correctly. With pavucontrol you can see in the output tab that sound is being played (even if you cannot hear it) and you have to make sure it is being sent to the correct channel (either speakers/headphones/line out, or whatever options your machine has available.

Re: Problem with Sound output

You may need to set the correct Master channel for Kmix-trinity, so - Right-click to 'mixer' icon in system tray -> 'Select Master Channel...' -> set 'Current Mixer' to 'PulseAudio' in the top right listbox -> click 'Ok' to close the dialog.
Thereafter unmute related outputs in kmix as well as in pavucontrol-qt, check mixer levels, and reboot for sure.

We recommend to use the 'kmix-trinity' package instead of 'kmix', as already mentioned here https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.ph … 415#p12415

You need to keep the original value "Autodetect" here.

They should be output settings on the 'Pavucontrol' -> 'Output Devices' tab.

Re: Problem with Sound output

q4osteam,

I reinstalled PulseAudio and Pavucontrol-qt. Then I uninstalled and purged them.
After, I purged kmix (not kmix-trinity).

Then I deleted .config folder (in /home/joaopedro/.config) and rebooted. But the sound wasn't working yet. I was so tired and went sleep.

Today, after reconfiguring all my settings (because I deleted the .config...), I reinstalled kmix (not kmix-trinity) and pulseaudio. And the sound now is working. I don't know why, but it is working now. :v
