Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

tlmiller, you should look at Netrunner, its KDE and based on Debian and also has a rolling version based on Manjaro.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

I don't know, from what I understand Netrunner is just a {k,x,l}ubuntu version of Debian.  Someone changed the default desktop, changed the wallpaper, and called it a new distribution.  They didn't actually ADD anything of substance.  Such as, q4os, adds Trinity desktop that simply isn't available in the Debian repos (yes, you can get it other ways, but requires 3rd party repos), so I have enjoy using it.  Sparky once upon a day offered LXQT that wasn't yet in the repos (it is now), so I used it several times (LXQT just not full featured enough for my tastes yet), but wouldn't use it anymore since now everything it offers of consequence is already in the Debian repos.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

Ive used the original Netrunner based on Ubuntu and tried Netrunner 17.06 and its not the same as the original even though they do some things the same. You would have to try it and see what you think but its definitely different in many ways.

Yeah, I use Chromium and Chrome as well as Firefox, but I'll probably get rid of Chrome now that Firefox actually works.  I only had it for watching DRM content, since Chromium is nearly impossible to get that to work, and Firefox was so insanely slow and resource inefficient that it wasn't usable really for anything.

I have indeed been getting rid of Chrome.  I've removed it from my q4os machine, and my Arch machine, plus my Debian desktop.  Will probably remove it from my other Debian laptops here in the coming days, and once I'm confident there aren't issues with Firefox 57 or Chromium in Fedora, I'll get it from there too (I've barely used Fedora 27 yet, I installed and it's sat there not being touched).

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

I run Korora 27 as its Fedora with all the perks I really want, without the hassle.  I use whichever one is available, Chrome or Chromium, and in some cases iIve found Chrome is a bit more consistent with some websites vs Chromium, not sure why to be honest.  Firefox 57 has a few quirks Ive found with some websites vs Firefox ESR 52.5 so glad I had an alternate browser.
Enjoying Mageia 6 KDE(going to try XFCE as well)and Ive been testing Netrunner 17.06 on my test system. Q4OS is still my main Linux OS for everyday use.

On a side note the response to Q4OS 2.4 has been amazing with many of my friends, family and clients.  News travels fast and even after showing other distros with various DEs all seem to gravitate towards Q4OS.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

My boss is looking at q4os for his linux laptop.  It's an older Baytrail/Braswell (can't remember which) dual core cheapy laptop, he currently runs Ubuntu, and does say that it's a bit slow, so I was showing him my Lenovo, and he's going to look into replacing Ubuntu on there with q4os.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

Even Lubuntu the lightest of the Ubuntu derivatives doesnt perform as well as Q4OS but both are better than Ubuntu.

I use Q4OS,Lubuntu and WattOS on various older laptops. Ive even got one D430 running Linux Lite.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

In continued testing Q4OS really is the best lightweight distro for laptops, particularly older laptops.

Its embarrassing for Windows 10 when an older laptop can perform so well running Q4OS.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

On a side note I run many other distros and some of those use Firefox ESR 52.5. Some of those distros, ESR seems to be running far quicker than it does on Q4OS and its very noticeable.    Not a big deal but curious.

If you install Firefox from Q4OS software centre, the 'icedtea-plugin' package from Debian repositories is automatically included into installation dependencies. It probably adds a load and causes a slowdown. The plugin could be easily removed after installation:
$ sudo apt-get autoremove icedtea-plugin
By the way, the Firefox-ESR in Q4OS is a pure Debian package with no specific patches, so it should perform the same way as in another Debian based distros.

Did you noticed a slowdown of Firefox-57 too, compared to another distros ?

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

That makes sense and something I didnt consider with the plugin.

I havent noticed any slowdown with Firefox 57 versus other distros, its very consistent. Im actually amazed as typically youll see some distros try to speed up Firefox particularly with initially loading it for use, Netrunner comes to mind.

Ill be doing more browser testing over the next few weeks and will report back.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

I will say after initial testing of Chrome 62 versus Firefox 57, 57 not only uses less resources but is faster with its actions.

Quantum may very well improve Mozilla's market share given its overall performance.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

It appears Mozilla is going to include a feature to warn users if a site has had a recent/ongoing data breach so you dont end up walking into a mess.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

I think the problem with data breaches is that we don't get told of them until way after "the horse has bolted" so to speak, and I doubt mozilla would know before anyone else (unless they are doing the breaching) so it's another "after the event" warning which I can't see as being of much benefit...

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

Of course Mozilla doesnt have ESP but being warned that a site has had recent issues is still a good thing, particularly after the Equifax issue when they didnt even learn from their first mistake.  Built in common sense has its limitations.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

After using Firefox Quantum quite awhile its not quite as stable as Firefox ESR but overall very good. That will only get better over time, but it bounces me out of some sites and I have occasional crashes with some sites.  It varies a bit depending on the distro Im using.

Resource usage for Quantum is about 30% less than Chrome and response time is about 10% better, but more testing is needed.

That's fairly close to what I've seen as far as speed and resource usage.  As far as stability, I have seen a few crashes (haven't yet with 57.0.1), but I was also having stability issues with ESR due to it freezing up with multiple tabs open and attempting to load.  So overall, I'd say it's actally MORE stable on my systems than ESR/previous currernt (since Fedora and Arch both use stable, only Debian was on ESR).

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

Ill have some detailed browser performance comparisons down the road.  In my case Firefox ESR 52.5 has been more stable than Firefox 57 where ive had a few crashes, but nothing major.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

I haven't had any issues with FF57 but I am starting to notice it slowing down a little and considering I only use it 50% of the time I'm browsing I would guess it won't be long before it suffers the same fate as it's predecessors... But even then it will still be faster, just not as fast as I noticed from a fresh install. And bearing in mind I keep my history as I often need to search back to a site I have viewed before but cant remember the URL, and I have a few other options that will slow it down over time so it's only to be expected in my use case really.

Re: Firefox 57 is out and its fast.

Ive done tests so far with 57 forcing long term use, including keeping history, and forcing many tabs, among others and even after continuous use it uses 15% less resources than Chrome(in a similar scenario) and is 7% faster in reaction.

The issues with 57 have been with certain websites and Mozilla was aware of the problems.  57 by far even in long term use outperforms all other browsers so far but Ill post some results in a few weeks. Im doing research for another site and cant give out detailed testing info just yet.

So far Firefox 57 is faster than Palemoon browser in its most recent form.  Ill try to have some better real world numbers down the road once Im done and submitted my research.
