Cannot install Update Manager!!! [SOLVED]

@q4osteam just advised me to install the Update Manager, so I tried. It gets to a point where it sees my Brother printer software and throws its hands up. The Setup Wizard shows a dialog box with this:

Package system is in non consistent state, it has to be recovered manually. Installation cannot continue now.
Cleaning and canceling ...

Here's what it seems to be complaining about:

What do I need to do to fix this? Not sure what the dpkg --add-architecture command would look like.

It's not issue with update manager, but some deeper problem with package system, what is inconsistent. We can see you have installed Liquorix kernel what is an external third party package, so it's likely the culprit.
First remove the external repositories and run:
$ sudo apt update
and post back.

I'm a bit embarrassed that I do not know what the command(s) are that I need to run to remove the external repositories. And once I do, what does that do to the maintenance of the Liquorix kernel? (I THINK it just got upgraded when I did the sudo apt full-upgrade recommended in a separate topic, FWIW.)

The same issue occurs if I try to install Synaptic Package Manager. I tried running the dpkg --add-architecture commands for the Brother printer items it seems to be complaining about, but that didn't help.

AH! I was able to install q4os-synaptic-trinity via apt. Just trying to update/upgrade Brave Browser, which the sofware center installed as a flatpak and is out of date.

Please run in terminal:
$ qrepolist
and post back the output.
The Liquorix kernel seems to be fine after all, some other external repositories may pull the error.

Note that I just today installed Brave Browser via command line and uninstalled the Flatpak version of it that I got from the Q4OS Software Centre, which was out of date and not updatable. So that repo wasn't there when I had this problem originally. Sorry for dirtying the picture!

Run:
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt-get check
$ sudo apt full-upgrade
and post the output.

If all the commands run without errors, the software center application should install fine. So also try to install Update manger from the SC. We would also recommend to uninstall Flatpak, if you don't plan installing Flatpak apps.

Got rid of Flatpak. The only apt command returning anything that looked useful is the first one:

It seems you have misconfigured apt somehow. You need to look at the files in /etc/apt/soutces.list.d/*.list and fix the lines in the repository that contain something like "...mfcj5720d...". If you need help with this, please post the contents of the suspect .list files.

Alas, NONE of the *.list files therein contain any text with "mfc" alone (I first used Xfe's search tool, then manually looked at each file in turn anyway).

I'm going to try just removing the Brother printer stuff. I can re-install it later if need be (and it do need be!).

EDIT: Uninstalling the Brother printer software allowed me to install the Update Manager. SHEESH! So wonder what happens when I now re-install the printer drivers? Stay tuned!

$ sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*
and update again:
$ sudo apt update

Okay, tried the commands anyway --

$ sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*
rm: cannot remove '/var/lib/apt/lists/auxfiles': Is a directory
rm: cannot remove '/var/lib/apt/lists/partial': Is a directory

The apt update command pretty much returned the same as before, however.

Something in your sources.list must be really ugly. The only idea how to determine it we would think about to rename/backup all the .list files to ".list.bak", run "apt-update". With no sources.list files the output must be clean. Subsequently enable .list files one by one and check the update command again and again.

Meanwhile, when I re-installed the printer drivers, I noted messages about some package being for i386, not amd64, so I downloaded the latest Brother printer installer tool and re-ran the install. Even then, there are the same or similar messages. See:

Yes, but first we need to fix your sources.list. It's really misconfigured a wrong way. Fixing Apt is an essential action.
- backup all the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list files to ".list.bak"
- run "sudo apt update" - with no sources.list files the output must be clean.
- subsequently enable .list files one by one and check the update command for each restored file.
- post the result here
This is important and quite easy action and show us the failed sources.list, so we can fix/remove it.

Only as soon as we fix sources.list, you can add i386 architecture.
$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
and update Apt
$ sudo apt update

Sounds a bit tedious, but I'll give it a shot.

I wrote a script to do it, maybe it can be helpful (see attachment). I've tested it on my clean system, so no error could be detected.
Minimal instructions in the first few lines.
Could q4osteam confirm it is safe to run (don't interrupt it)?

This is not a procedure that will show the problematic file, sorry for the misunderstanding. We thought you would rename all .list files first.

So let's take it in smaller steps, please follow exactly:
- Rename/backup all /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list files to ".list.bak". All .list files.
- Run "sudo apt update"
Post back this single output.

Sorry, should have included the results when ALL list files were renamed *.bak -- here it is:

$ sudo apt update
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
All packages are up to date.

The results shown in my previous last post started renaming the *.bak files individually one by one. Sorry if I misunderstood the instructions!

Well it's clean, so the snag must be in some .list. Now enable file "10_q4os.list" and then run "apt update" again and post the output.
