Yes, we will examine these tests. If we understand correctly the first "PC 1  (copy slow)" took place on the original computer in question, while the second test on completely another hardware "PC 2   (copy fast)".

At this point it would be helpful if you could ship the debug files "reportq4" https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502 of two systems. Both tests on the same original computer. The first on the slow system and the second on the fast one - i.e. with Plasma installed. This will allow us to compare them and find the differences. It is important to run both tests on the exactly same hardware.

You can attach the debug files to the forum post or send them by email to support@q4os.org.

We have found a suspicious system service, however it may not be the culprit. Please try to disable "rtkit" service on the slow system:
$ sudo systemctl stop rtkit-daemon.service
$ sudo systemctl mask rtkit-daemon.service
Reboot and report the transfer speed.

I formatted the partition, I installed Q4OS Trinity Basic (Aquarius), I updated the system, in addition to my account (mino) I created a new user (provolino), in my account (mino) copy file = slow, I exit the system, enter (provolino), copy file = FAST (why?)

So the issue gets even more muddled. The first user "mino" and superuser "root" experience slow speed, while created user "provolino" experiences fast speed. We will take these findings into account within the investigation.

We would really want to find out what goes wrong, so thanks for your patience and detailed reporting. Please continue to report any findings here. We are still unable to reproduce the issue, it's bound with some hardware only.

You say you changed user, but did you reboot the machine or just log out mino and log in provolino?
NOTE that the provolino file transfer is not the same size as the mino transfer.

I have been doing some testing of this issue and have found that the file appears to be cached somewhere.
As the same user transfer file source>destination.
Delete destination
Repeat source>destination and the speeds are hugely different.

It is possible that may well happen if you swap user rather than reboot between tests.

As a general observation I have been testing with different hardware and with both Q4OS Trinity and Plasma and EndeavourOS on the same machine and have not seen any material difference in transfer speeds.

I would also mention that the HP still has its original Hitachi 5400rpm spinner which is now the best part of 20 years old, the external Toshiba spinner is the best part of 10 years old and you're running over USB2.

The first thing I would suggest is to install gsmartcontrol and test integrity of the drives.

Early on you mentioned that it was OK under Windows and Ubuntu. This suggests that if all else is equal it probably comes down to firmware and or kernel that actually made the difference. Given my experience with a wide range of HP kit of the same era I think firmware may be the reason. At a guess it is just dropping the transfer speed to USB1 speeds as a default.

Happy to be proved wrong but just a few thoughts.

I tested it both by logging out and restarting the PC, nothing changes, as you can see with the user "mino" the file takes about 2 hours to be transferred, while the same file in the user "provolino" was transferred in 10 seconds! The same thing happens also installing Plasma on Trinity, On Plasma the copy is fast on Trinity the copy is slow.

NOTE: the PC is always the same, the OS is always the same (Q4OS Trinity Acquarius), the USB port I use is always the same, the external drive is always the same... the file copy speed varies if I change user or Desktop Environment....
I don't think it's the firmware's fault...

You are not wrong, of course. We never said your hardware is faulty. But the issue is hardware dependent obviously, because we are unable to reproduce it on another computer. And that is why it is difficult to investigate.

Okay i "used to" have this issue too, file transfer in Q4OS Trinity Basic (Aquarius) used to be too slow, and way faster in window's installation (dual boot). But yesterday when i checked, it was even faster than windows. Windows 10 gives around 15~36mb/s and now my Q4OS installation gives 86~112mb/s for transferring the same file from my HDD to pendrive and even to n from different partitions. I did a lot of tweaks but i dont quite have a list of those changes.

-i did not make/remove any extra user, its the same as the one i made during installation
-my laptop has TOSHIBA MQ01ABF050 HDD installed
-i never installed plasma in current installation
-used dolphin file manager for a while but it was crashing too often(i made a different issue about this) but then switched to thunar

i am willing to give information about my current installation if you require it,

Originally it was stated that file transfer speeds were as expected when using Ubuntu.

That being the case it would be interesting to know what desktop environment.

Clearly there must be something in Ubuntu which is not there in Q4OS/Debian so is there a way of working out what it is?

On Q4OS/Debian @minuccio63 experiences slow speed on the Trinity/Basic setup for the first user only. He gets correct speed right after installing Plasma as a secondary desktop. So the question is, what package fixes the speed ?

Moreover, and it's really peculiar, he also gets proper speed for the next regular user, even without installing Plasma.

- Login to the Trinity session.
- Insert USB device and open its content in a new Konqueror window.
- Run in terminal:
