[SOLVED] WiFi is connected but can't access Internet

Good morning,

I am a new user of this community and a new user in the Linux world. I have installed Q4OS with the aim of reusing a very old PC using Windows XP, both for professional curiosity and to give my kids a basic tool for their scholastic activities.
Here the basic info for the support request:

Hardware
IBM Thinkpad T30, Pentium 4, CPU 2.00 GHz, RAM 502 MB
Network controller Intersil Corp. ISL8474 Prism 2.5 – ISL3872 Prism 3
Ethernet controller Intel 82801 CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM)

Router
Fiber connection – covering protocols up to 802.11ax – WiFi6

I have installed the ISO q4os-5.2-i386-instcd.r2.iso, related to the Aquarius version, then installed via DVD created with ImgBurn.
The desktop environment is Trinity and the installation chosen was the Base installation.
Network Manager downloaded from Software Centre.

A brief description and steps to reproduce the issue.
Ethernet connection worked flawlessly. I started working on Network manager. No Wi-Fi network was available (including mine). With some difficulty I managed to get the wireless connection working setting it up as an hidden network

When I tried a network access with this connection, nothing is working (no web browser nor proprietary connections like Synaptic).
I really don’t know what could be missing (correct drivers or other Network  Manager entries)

$ inxi –Fxxx and post back the terminal output.

To conclude, I don’t have the knowledge on Network Manager and on Linux/Debian commands to do further troubleshooting to get the information needed; it's a tough challenge trying to find help in this multifaceted world of distros/communities.

Therefore I would like to have your help to see if this problem is solvable or is it better to stop here as the HW is too old to be “saved”.
Many thanks in advance

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi is connected but can't access Internet

Hi,
I’ve found this post within an Ubuntu forum (posted 3 months ago)
https://askubuntu.com/questions/790745/ … o-internet

… knowing how to address a non working internet connection may help as follows.
opening a terminal and see if you can ping or traceroute to google's public dns.

ping 8.8.8.8
mtr 8.8.8.8

If you get communication with Googl's public DNS then skip down to the last step on DNS.
If you're not getting a ping/traceroute to Goole's DNS then start by making sure your wireless adapter is getting IP information with the command.

ifconfig

output should have ip information listed for your wireless adapter something like...

wlan0   Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
        inet addr:192.168.1.55  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

next check to make sure you have a default route

route

output should have a route something like...
default    192.168.1.1    0.0.0.0         UG    0      0        0 wlan0

At this point you should be able to ping and/or traceroute to Google's public DNS "8.8.8.8". If not then call your Internet provider for additional help with your internet connection.

Now that we can ping google's public DNS we can be well assured that our internet is working. If you're still having problems then your computer is most likely not reaching a working DNS service. You can check your DNS servers with...

cat /etc/resolv.conf

You should also check the connection status in your network manager if you're using a desktop version of ubuntu. Once you have identified/set your DNS servers make sure you can ping them as well. If you can ping the DNS servers that you have set then the problem resides above the network layer in a firewall or application issue.

Here some questions:
Is this something applicable for this problem ?
Is this something applicable in this environment ?

Thanks for any help to move forward

We don't think these instructions would be applicable. We would recommend you to follow instructions here https://linuxhint.com/3-ways-to-connect … on-debian/ and post back.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi is connected but can't access Internet

Initial notes:
The connection on my network that I’ve got using Network Manager was achieved using the "Hidden Network" option as it is not visible for this laptop.

Network with iwconfig – commands executed with connection “on”

sudo iwconfig
lo        no wireless extensions.

enp2s8    no wireless extensions.

wifi0     IEEE 802.11b  ESSID:"iliadbox-******"
          Mode:Ad-Hoc  Frequency:2.462 GHz  Cell: 02:05:A1:16:A3:CC
          Bit Rate:2 Mb/s
          Retry short limit:8   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off

enp2s2    IEEE 802.11b  ESSID:"iliadbox-******"
          Mode:Ad-Hoc  Frequency:2.462 GHz  Cell: 02:05:A1:16:A3:CC
          Bit Rate:2 Mb/s
          Retry short limit:8   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
Link Quality=25/70  Signal level=-53 dBm  Noise level=-79 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:184  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:620   Missed beacon:0

sudo iwlist scan
franco@q4os-desktop:~$ sudo iwlist enp2s2 scan
enp2s2    No scan results

franco@q4os-desktop:~$ sudo iwlist wifi0 scan
wifi0     No scan results

Network with nmcli – commands executed with connection “off”

franco@q4os-desktop:~$ nmcli d wifi connect iliadbox-****** password ******
Errore: rete con SSID «iliadbox-******» non trovata. (meaning not found)

Dont’ know if was correct, but I’ve tried also:
franco@q4os-desktop:~$ nmcli d wifi connect iliadbox-****** password ****** hidden yes
Errore: rete con SSID «iliadbox-******» non trovata.

And also
franco@q4os-desktop:~$ nmcli d wifi connect iliadbox-****** password ****** ifname enp2s2 hidden yes
Errore: rete con SSID «iliadbox-******» non trovata.

Network with nmtui – commands executed with connection “off”
If I select “Activate a connection”, I’ve got only the Ethernet connection and no wireless network visible
if I select “Edit a connection”, I’m able to see the one created in Network Manager
(see pic 04)
I’ll wait for your input to see if I need to dig more into this

Network with wpa_supplicant – executed with connection “off”
the wpasupplicat was already installed and gave me some errors; unistalled the reinstalled

the following command was executed with no errors
wpa_passphrase iliadbox-****** ****** | sudo tee /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
network={
        ssid="iliadbox-******"
        #psk="******"
        psk=******
}

franco@q4os-desktop:~$ sudo wpa_supplicant -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -i enp2s2
Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
nl80211: Driver does not support authentication/association or connect commands
nl80211: deinit ifname=enp2s2 disabled_11b_rates=0
enp2s2: Failed to initialize driver interface
enp2s2: CTRL-EVENT-DSCP-POLICY clear_all

Thanks a lot; let me know what I can do more
looking forward for a feedback

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi is connected but can't access Internet

Some points that retained my attention:

In your initial post you wrote (6th paragraph): "no web browser".
Do you mean you don't have a web browser installed? If that is the problem you could install Firefox from Q4OS Software Centre.

In the output of $ sudo iwconfig, I read
wifi0     IEEE 802.11b  ESSID:"iliadbox-******"
          Mode:Ad-Hoc ...
although on my wifi, Mode is "Managed", not "Ad-Hoc"

In your screenshot, there is no bar-graph showing the WiFi signal level...?

More considerations:
- if there is a switch on the side of your laptop to set WiFi on/off, is it on?
- you could install rfkill ($ sudo apt install rfkill) and run it ($ sudo rfkill) to see the status of your wireless devices.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi is connected but can't access Internet

Hi hchiper

First of all, thanks for your comment; I was starting to feel too alone :-)
Coming to your points:

1. the web browser is correctly installed. The meaning of my point is that, although I see the connection to the wifi network, when I open the browser (Konqueror) and try to reach any site (e.g. Google) the message I receive is:
"An error occurred while loading https://google.com: Host www.google.com unknown"

Likewise, if I test the connection with Synaptic, the message I get is:
"W: Error downloading http://q4os.org/package name. Could not resolve "q4os.org"

2. I will test the "Managed" parameter instead of "Ad-hoc" and I'll post the result

3. Signal strength is good (3 bars)

4. There is no mechanical switch, just a sw configuration that is always enabled for "Enable Network Features" and "Enable Wi-Fi"

5. I will definitely do this test too and will post the result as soon as possible

Thanks again
Cheers

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi is connected but can't access Internet

I had the chance to do the  two steps

Wi-Fi Configuration
I have only 3 possibilities to choose from:
Client
Hotspot
Ad-Hoc

Client is simply not working and no message is issued
Hotspot is not working and the following message is issued:
Connection “Iliadbox” is not available on device enp2s2 because profile is not compatible with device (the device does not support Access Point mode)
The only connection working is when I use the “Ad-Hoc” mode

Regarding rfkill, I’ve installed it using Synaptic; I’ve got version 2.38.1-5+b1 (latest).
When I tried to run the command “sudo rfkill” in terminal (Konsole) I have no output whatsoever. If I simply run “rfkill” I got the following message
“bash: rfkill: command not found”

Thanks again

rfkill is available only for the "superuser", so it is normal that, without sudo, you get "command not found".
What is strange is that sudo rfkill lists nothing, just as if no WiFi adapter is found on your system. No idea what the problem can be.
Except maybe a bad configuration as a consequence of several tries. Maybe you could boot from a live CD, watching carefully if you see a warning about WiFi, and check if your WiFi works. If it doesn't work either, maybe a driver or hardware problem, but I fear I can't help further.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi is connected but can't access Internet

This has been an issue with the T30 for a few years now.
Just get a USB wifi dongle and have done with it.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008FZO1A2 works out of the box with linux.
Don't know which country you're in but you may find the equivalent.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi is connected but can't access Internet

Hi bin,

Thanks for the feedback; I'll try to get an USB dongle, which make sense.

Just for my personal knowledge: when you buy one of these dongles (for the moment I haven't found the model you indicated) is Q4OS able to detect a new peripheral on a USB port and download or propose the drivers necessary for it ?

Thanks again
Cheers

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi is connected but can't access Internet

Hi bin,
I have got a Wi-Fi adapter from a friend. Using an Ethernet connection, here what I did step by step:

1. Booted the PC with the wifi adapter in the USB port
2. Checked the adapter name using the "System Info" program (RTL88x2bu from Realtek)
3. Googled "Wifi USB adapter RTL88x2bu". Found a discussion on a Debian forum.

What I did then are the following steps:

1. Install the packages git and dkms, that were missing on my installation.
2. Run the following commands in a terminal:
   git clone https://github.com/cilynx/rtl88x2bu
   cd rtl88x2bu
   sudo dkms install $PWD
   sudo modprobe 88x2bu

The last command was quite long, but went ok.
Rebooted the pc and did some test without the Ethernet connection.

As a result, I was able to see all the wifi network around me, including mine.
The final configuration was simple and direct. Just needed to insert the pwd.

Many thanks for putting me on the right path.
Hope that this should be helpful for newcomers like me (with a very old hw like mine) in the Linux environment.
Cheers.
