Installer Virtualbox

Recevez mes meilleurs messages.

Re: Installer Virtualbox

Use one of the following commands (in a terminal), according to the version of virtualbox you want:
Utilisez l'une des commandes suivantes (dans un terminal), selon la version de VirtualBox que vous souhaitez :

$ sudo apt install virtualbox-5.2
$ sudo apt install virtualbox-6.0
$ sudo apt install virtualbox-6.1

Note that this is valid with Q4OS Centaurus. Maybe Gemini has different versions available. You can know using
Notez que ceci concerne Q4OS Centaurus. Gemini dispose peut-être de versions différentes. Vous pouvez le savoir en utilisant

$ apt search virtualbox

That quote from the VBox wiki is short, the whole thing reads

Mixed installations (e.g. Debian/Lenny ships an AMD64 kernel with 32-bit packages) are not supported. To install VirtualBox anyway you need to setup a 64-bit chroot environment.

So, if you plan to install VBox in any of those systems and architectures, then you need the chroot environment. Otherwise, you don't. You just install, launch and start creating VMs.

@hs1949
You can use Q4OS installer to install Virtualbox on your computer, see https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3624

Maybe the language barrier ...
I'm talking about 64 bits, but what are you talking about?

I don't know if you misread that wiki part, or whether I misread your post, but it seems to me you tried to say by quoting that, that in order to install VBox in a system(64-bit or 32-bit), a chroot environment needs to be created, which is not true, unless you tried to install a 64-bit VBox in a 32-bit system, otherwise you don't. I mean, I've installed VBox several times, I've been using it since 2000 something, and have never had the need for a chroot environment, like I said, just install, launch and start creating VMs. I use QEMU, too. Maybe you're right and it's just a language barrier; we both got lost in translation.

Re: Installer Virtualbox

The first message does not indicate which OS is installed, 32 or 64.
I tried to point out that there are only 64 on the Virtualbox site. Your link is also setup_q4os-virtualbox_4.2-a1_amd64.esh.
Tolkem brought up the installation process.
Where am I wrong?
And who cares how many times and when he installed programs?
Or is this a post on the topic?

Re: Installer Virtualbox

This thread has made me discover chroot. I've found an interesting presentation.
Nevertheless, the need of chroot in this case is not clear to me. I've installed VB x64 on my x64 machine, using the command I mentioned above, which worked flawlessly, without need of chroot.
As I understand, chroot is needed only if one wants to install both 32 & 64 bits versions on the same 64 bits (not 32 bits) machine. Is this correct?

According to this from VBox's wiki

Note: The package architecture has to match the Linux kernel architecture, that is, if you are running a 64-bit kernel, install the appropriate AMD64 package (it does not matter if you have an Intel or an AMD CPU). Mixed installations (e.g. Debian/Lenny ships an AMD64 kernel with 32-bit packages) are not supported. To install VirtualBox anyway you need to setup a 64-bit chroot environment.

I think, you need the chroot when trying to install a 64-bit Vbox version in a 32-bit system.

Re: Installer Virtualbox

Restarting slapd (via systemctl): slapd.serviceJob for slapd.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status slapd.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

Hi hs1949,

It is your interest to post only in English. This will increase your chances to get help (and it's a rule in this forum).

Be also as explicit as possible when you describe your problem.
- "quelques essais": what did you do that caused the error?
- Why did you open a terminal as root?
- How did you try to install softwares? With "sudo apt install" ? Or from the Software Centre? Both should work flawlessly.

A long time ago, I also did "quelques essais" being logged as root, but unluckily I was not aware of the consequences, and I ended with a "kernel panic"; the system never booted anymore. In French, I would call this "jouer à l'apprenti sorcier".

Reinstalling Q4OS is not a bad solution if your present installation was only to test or to practice.

Re: Installer Virtualbox

Hello, thank you for your answers. I am new to Linux Q4OS. But it is this distribution that I prefer. My tests are not successful, so I will completely reinstall Q4OS.

I understand a little English, but I don't know how to write it well. So my answer, I'll post it to you below, translated by Google.

We can put this post as resolved.

Meilleures salutations.
