[Solved] VLC won't play FACTORY dvd movie

I tried to play a store-purchased dvd movie and it will not work. I'm guessing I need to install something along the lines of a lib file to get this to work.

I tried 6 factory dvd movies...no luck.
I tested the same 6 dvds on XP, running a portable version of VLC...no problems at all.

Thanks in advance for any help.

libdvdcss2 is normally the issue. There are a couple of sources.

https://download.videolan.org/debian/stable/   will give you access to that file in various versions.  I've attached the 64bit deb which installs through gdebi or dpkg -i without any dependency issues

The other option is to get it from the unofficial Debian Multimedia repo at http://www.deb-multimedia.org/

You'll need to add the repo info as described, and apt-get update will update a number of multimedia based files on your system.

In addition, the most easy way is to install 'Multimedia Codecs' from Q4OS Software Centre. It will pull 'libdvdcss2' as well.

I wasn't sure whether this pulls in the dreaded Flash Player - though it is of course the much simpler solution smile

Just a thought - if it doesn't cause too much pain, would it be possible to pull Flash Player (flashplugin-nonfree) out and make it a single separate installation?

No, 'Multimedia Codecs' doesn't pull flash at all, it adds the 'deb-multimedia' repository and installs following core packages:

libdvdcss2, w64codecs:amd64 | w32codecs:i386, va-driver-all, libav-tools, twolame, libaacs0, libfaad2, libmp4v2-2, libfaac0, libmp3lame0, libdvdnav4, libdvdread4, libbluray1, libcrystalhd3, libopencore-amrwb0, libopencore-amrnb0

Re: [Solved] VLC won't play FACTORY dvd movie

The only Firefox installer pulls the flash, and it's deactivated by default, so user has to manually enable it prior to using it. As discussed in another thread, there will be an option in Q4OS Firefox installer in the future to select, whether to include flash, or not.

Excellent - thanks for clearing that up.
