(Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

I just installed Q4OS on my wife's laptop, every time it wakes from sleep it won't connect to internet. I even gave it a reserved IP address in my router, still not working correctly. What can I do about this. So far this is the only problem I am having with this new os. Just to let you know I have another laptop in the kitchen doing basically the same thing but it is running Kubuntu 14.04 so I don't think it is distro relevant. I also tried to run iwconfig in terminal but gave an error instead of info.

Re: (Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

Its a really common problem that occurs not just with Linux but with Windows as well. Could be an issue with the driver that supports your hardware. Ive had it happen intermittently and just avoid allowing my systems to go to sleep. Ive had it happen with several Linux distros and Windows 7.

Maybe the devs will have a suggestion.

Re: (Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

Thanks for replying, yes I have had it happen on some Linux distros and Windows also, and I agree it is usually driver related. I think I got it fixed but not sure until she goes to start it up again, working ok last I knew yesterday. I made a few changes in settings related to tdepowersettings, but don't know if its fixed until she tries to start it today, heres to hoping.

Anyway, later on I also had a realization that it seems to happen when she unplugged it while it was sleeping, even after I told her not to do that because we don't know the battery condition, its a "new" used laptop, an HP G7 1150us. I almost wiped it to install Kubuntu 16.04 but used google to try again to find a cure. I use my wife as a ginny pig, she has used Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Zorin, Peppermint and a couple other I can't recall.

I set all my pc's to sleep when not being used, saves pc life and energy but haven't had much trouble, a little but not much. Hopefully someone might be able to steer me in the right direction if my adjustments didn't work.

I'll be back to mark as solved or ask more questions, thanks again.

Re: (Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

That would have been my next suggestion as changing power settings can improve the situation but may not solve it entirely.

I dont use sleep settings, particularly with laptops. If its not being used I want it turned off completely given the many issues with battery fires and cooling issues with some models.

Agree with you, never pull the plug when the laptop is sleeping.

Your laptop I believe uses the Broadcom 4313 chip so it may be an issue with the driver. Ive had mixed luck with Broadcom with my many Dell laptops with no improvement in drivers so far, thus why I stopped using sleep.

Re: (Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

I absolutely never use sleep or hibernation, I want my pc/laptop to be either on or off with no in-between, and considering the fast bootup time (especially with Q4OS) it just doesn't seem warranted (IMO) to use sleep modes.
Just my opinion of course and I'm sure users that are used to using these functions will want to continue doing so. smile

Re: (Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

Totally agree Dai and given the many issues with sleep/hibernation its not worth it caused by the driver, bios and acpi issues with some systems

Re: (Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

Turns out one of the things I did was install acpi and the other dependencies. I never use hibernation, just sleep and it works on all of my systems but this one, and I have many. We fired it up today and internet was good, so it looks like I solved my issue. Next time it goes to sleep I am going to unplug it and see if I can recreate the issue.
My main laptop, an old DV7 1245dx and it sleeps when not used and when I close the lid, when I open lid it wakes up and I put in password and bam, its ready, never had a problem with sleep I couldn't work out somehow.

Re: (Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

Glad its working so far and you been luckier than most with sleep.  Its a pretty common complaint of either systems not waking up or having issues once they do.

Even my older laptops boot up very quickly so using sleep just seems unnecessary.

Re: (Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

Update, I think I have fixed the issue and it was not completely the OS's problem. My intermittent connection started happening again and I simply could not get a handle on why. Found out I had the RT5930 card from Realtek, so I went searching online for the right drivers for Linux. What I found instead was information concerning my router.

Before I found this, I got pissed and went to wipe the drive and put Kubuntu 16.04.3 on this system, running a live usb it connected and ran just fine. Instead of wiping the drive I just added it to the hard drive as a dual boot, she now has Q4OS and Kubuntu. But I had the same internet connection issue in Kubuntu, exactly the same, now I am really pissed and confused. I had it installed, updated, added Chrome and Dropbox, Gdebi and other stuff we use, no issues. An hour later wife goes to use it and wallah, no internet.

Originally I had TKIP and AES configured for 2.4 and 5ghz signals in my router, something I found was saying something about not using TKIP at all, use only AES instead. Well I went and changed this in my router and have not had this problem return. I woke the pc up this morning, and it was running good, both installs.

Don't know how to mark it as solved.

Oh, I also have a 15" HP Envy with Kubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 as dualboot and it was doing basically the same thing, changing the router settings also fixed this one too, wow.

That's definitely something to remember for future use.

You can mark the thread as solved by editing the title of your first post and add [solved] to the beginning of the subject line.

Re: (Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

Thank you. I'm gonna try and keep her on Q4OS if she continues to like it, seems to run pretty good.

Re: (Solved) Wireless not connecting on wake or restart

Glad you got it solved and Q4OS is far lighter than Kubuntu and will make your laptops fly.
