Re: A simple small update notifier

That's great! I wonder how many users are using it, One problem with having no (fingers crossed) bugs is that we don't get to hear much from the users about it.
Maybe I should introduce a fault and see how many report it.

Don't worry I'm not going to do it really!!! smile

Ive got a lot of people using it with their Linux installs here.

Re: A simple small update notifier

I find that anyone I install an OS for, whether it's Q4OS or Debian, they just call/text/email/skype me rather than ask here (or any other forum), some of them think I'm a genius even after I tell them I usually google the problem they have before giving them the answer I found big_smile .

Re: A simple small update notifier

Same here, as I get people who contact me thinking I know it all and many times I have to look it up.  Ive been around a lot of tech so sometimes Ive had experience with the problem and can give them an answer off the top of my head.  My background in Windows is far more extensive than Linux.

Re: A simple small update notifier

I used to give regular support to some friends with Windows, but I have managed to convince most of them to use Linux, mainly due to the age of their machines and support dropping for Xp/Vista and I haven't really used Windows since Vista so my knowledge on that side is mostly redundant now. It's only on odd occasions that I help Windows users now (thankfully) but they are the ones who will just buy a new machine when there one starts slowing down (Part of MS plan I think <conspiracy theory>).

Re: A simple small update notifier

A lot of people just end up buying a new machine with Windows 10 on it, which for them may be the best option to gain some short term support.

I simply dont want to use Windows 10 so when 2020 comes around Im done and except for having a few pcs with older OS installed Im using Linux for everything.

Ive done support work on and off for years with all versions of DOS/Windows.

Re: A simple small update notifier

I've been pretty much reliant on Linux for around 9 or 10 years now, although I was still using Windows for anything I couldn't do with Linux, but I find that now I'm more used to how Linux works I can do everything I ever did on Windows and a whole lot more with Linux, oh yea and sooooo much quicker!!!

Re: A simple small update notifier

I began my interest with Linux in 2007 when i was having some financial issues as many Americans did due to the financial crash. Ive been using it alongside Windows since then but only in the last few years have I begun to shift to it for most of my daily needs.

The gaming market moves to Linux, like Steam support/GOG have really helped me move away more quickly. Im hoping my wife will make the move this year and I can drop Windows entirely.

Re: A simple small update notifier

It's really hard to move completely away from Windows, mainly down to the occasional things like the latest skype (not a problem now, but it has been) or some program compatibility with RDP to friends machines, sometimes the Linux versions are too outdated to be compatible for a MS Version (probably deliberately <more conspiracy theories> ) that I need to connect to them...

Re: A simple small update notifier

It is tough and my wife has had difficulties given the variety of software shes using that doesnt have equivalents in Linux.  Even with my gaming there are times that I have to Windows.
