Re: Wannacry ransomware attack spreads across the globe

Its like a ghost town as many sites are down, trying to prevent or avoid issues with the second wave of Wannacty ransomware.

If you run a site and its down its probably due to this issue.

Re: Wannacry ransomware attack spreads across the globe

Not just overseas from the US either.
I don't know if it is related but I check the solar x-ray flux and the noaa site has been down all day.
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/goes-x-ray-flux

I get "
ERROR
The requested URL could not be retrieved
"
Either wannacry or just normal gov problems. smile

You would think they would have learned to use linux by now!

Re: Wannacry ransomware attack spreads across the globe

A lot of US federal sites still use Windows even though some progress has been made with some agencies using Red Hat.

Re: Wannacry ransomware attack spreads across the globe

Wannacry has evolved into the Uiwix ransomware and this time the kill switch is off and other variants are appearing.

Re: Wannacry ransomware attack spreads across the globe

Its not going away anytime soon and your best defense is either running Linux or being very smart with how you handle email and online surfing.

Re: Wannacry ransomware attack spreads across the globe

I think being smart about email and online activity is second nature to most long term Linux users (ironically the ones least affected).

Re: Wannacry ransomware attack spreads across the globe

Thats very true and given that signature based virus programs dont work with this threat, Windows users need to get a lot smarter.

Hmmm... That's a bit of a tall order if you ask me big_smile and if they did they wouldn't be Windows users they'd be Linux users. cool

Re: Wannacry ransomware attack spreads across the globe

LOL!  but a lot of Windows users dont have a choice as its for work or projects. Most of the testing work I do such as video cards/drivers is for Windows.

The gaming work is also Windows oriented but down the road thats going to change.

Re: Wannacry ransomware attack spreads across the globe

About 10 (or was it 15) years ago a job I was working at mostly was using an sql database on Windows. The IT department heads would not even HEAR much less talk about Linux! Maybe with a new generation that has been exposed to the advantages of Linux that can change!

Re: Wannacry ransomware attack spreads across the globe

Many IT departments use Linux and a much larger percentage of servers use Linux as well, around 30% I believe. Many enterprises though still use Windows including my company, who have proprietary software they prefer to use, thats only compatible with Windows. Hopefully things will change more.
