I don't know if this is anything to be concerned about (and I am guessing I could probably just ignore it) but I am getting these messages in my syslog every time I boot up.

Sep 23 19:24:07 q4os-desktop systemd-fsck[305]: /dev/sda1: 202 files, 7175/126976 clustersI foolishly did not do a backup of the original partition, but at the time I imagined I would have to wipe the drive completely during the course of figuring out how to best configure it. I cannot see anything that causes me alarm but was just wondering if anyone else had noticed this with an efi/uefi system.
Offline
I think it's nothing to worry about, but I'm pretty sure I will be wiping the system completely in the near future, so will see what happens when I do. As fsck is happy to leave it without changing anything I would guess that there isn't much of a problem and it's just reporting something out of the ordinary.
Offline
Just thought I would post an update, I installed the newer version of e2fsprogs (from backports) and still get this error so I disabled checking in the /etc/fstab file for this partition and I no longer get this error message, I'm not too sure what effect this will have except for not checking that 1 filesystem. If anyone thinks this would seem like a bad resolution please let me know why you think so, apart from the obvious that it is better to check the filesystem at boot time that is. ![]()

Hi Dai,
well haven't worked on Linux systems in my years as a PC Tech- only hobby level.
BUT a sign of a failing harddrive (hdd) are (many) sector reads/writes
since this refers to a the boot area - I would do a complete backup - run the the disk through a thorough disk media check
do a fresh format to (whoops - does Linux do a complete format of each sector?? it seems to me that Linux does a 'fast format')
full format to ID the bad sectors [or get a new disk-- do you have 3-5 yrs on this hdd - usual life of an hdd]
just my windoze experience.
Olzeke
The journey is . . . the reward.
Offline
Appreciate the feedback Olzeke, but this laptop is only a month old so I would hope it's not failing hardware, I think it is due to a slightly different fat format than fsck is used to as it is a Windows 10 system. But that's just a guess really, I thought on one of the error outputs it said something about capital letters being used but it doesn't seem to be saying that now...
I probably will do a complete hdd format soon though but I'm holding out til the next Q4OS release as that will have UEFI boot capabilities and will be easier for me to install. ![]()
And I'm only a hobbyist too. ![]()
Offline
Just a side thought - would the sector be using fat or exfat?
Offline
It is vfat but if it makes a difference it is the ESP partition for UEFI booting.
@crosscourt
I am just a hobbyist, but I often have more free time to play and test, so it might seem like I am more, but hey I'll take an ego boost ![]()

Just a quick update, I wiped the laptop and started from a totally blank HDD and installed Win10 first, and after a little over 3 hours I had a fully updated and fresh Win10 installation, and TBH I was so impressed I put the kettle on and made some coffee!! And while I was drinking it I installed Q4OS and the full desktop profile. ![]()
But back to the point of this thread, the error messages are not appearing any more. So I can only assume I must have messed something up with my tinkering, and a fresh install cleared things up.
