Weird sound crash

While adjusting my sound notifications I was testing the ones that were set by playing them from Settings->Control Centre->Sound & Multimedia->System Notifications When i played the one for Something special happened in the program which was set to KDE_Beep.ogg I got the crash box pop-up and duly reported the error to the TDE-devs (after doing it two more times to check there was an issue). I also tested it on another install and got the same results. I can only guess at this stage that it could be a bad/corrupt file (KDE_Beep.ogg) but as it happens on separate installations (but still the same file) I'm thinking that shouldn't be the issue.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Just to add to this, the file plays without issue using ogg123

Re: Weird sound crash

Yes, we can confirm a bug, artsplay crashes on attempt to play 'KDE_Beep.ogg' file.

EDIT: It could be Q4OS specific, as we are not able to reproduce it on a clean TDE installation so far.

Re: Weird sound crash

Ok thanks, I thought it was a problem just with the one file...

Re: Weird sound crash

You need to install 'libarts1-mpeglib-trinity' package. The issue will be fixed in the next Q4OS release.

Re: Weird sound crash

Thanks guys, I installed the package and it has stopped the crashes, but the KDE_Beep.ogg sound is now not audible, and KDE_Vox_Ahem.ogg is now only half audible so it seems like it is cutting some of the sound of the short clips.

Re: Weird sound crash

Just a thought - vorbis-tools includes ogg123
In the System Notifications>Player settings you can pick a different player.
I don't use system sounds but does that make any difference instead of the kde component?

Re: Weird sound crash

I'm getting no system sounds at all today... even ogg123 from the command line plays nothing... Will try a reboot and see if that helps

Re: Weird sound crash

Please try to install 'libarts1-akode-trinity libarts1-audiofile-trinity' packages too, this should solve the issue.

Re: Weird sound crash

I had to shut right down and then start up from scratch and it now works properly! And thank you @bin your suggestion works perfectly! I never thought of that until you said.

Re: Weird sound crash

@Dai
Which step did fix the issue for you, the first one 'libarts1-mpeglib-trinity' or the second 'libarts1-akode-trinity libarts1-audiofile-trinity' ?

Re: Weird sound crash

The first fix (libarts1-mpeglib-trinity) allowed the file to play but caused the problems in post #5 then the second fix (libarts1-akode-trinity libarts1-audiofile-trinity) which also installed libakode2 solved the issue completely. I don't know if the second fix would have worked if I hadn't done the first as it was already installed.

Re: Weird sound crash

Ok thanks, now we understand completely. The libakode2 should only be sufficient to fix the issue.

EDIT: libarts1-akode-trinity + libarts1-audiofile-trinity packages, both needed. Thanks Dai_trying.

I booted into another installation to test this and I still get the crash if i only install libakode2, so I installed libarts1-akode-trinity libarts1-audiofile-trinity as well and that fixed it. Just posting for clarification, Thanks guys for the fix. smile
