I will be testing Quarkos Resolute Raccoon Plasma Live Mode, Basic and Desktop I’m following up on my previous post where I tested Trinity, https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=6089 it will be on a Windows 8 era DELL Inspiron 20 Model 3034 Desktop.
Plasma Live Mode
First thing all [OK] checks passed then I reached the setup WiFi black screen after adding my network it then went to a screen with a passing maybe five [OK] checks then booted into the desktop. I then opened Firefox to test the sound drivers and YouTube steaming and sound worked great. I then tested the WiFi on the system tray while deleting the current connection and reconnecting with the system tray and it connected successfully no errors. Bluetooth also connected successfully with the system tray so now it’s time to install the Basic version, I would also like to point out the Install Quarkos 26.04 LTS icon I had to use the double left click on the mouse the right click only had only an “Open with Kate” option. I then proceeded with the install I chose the same install alongside, when the desktop did the auto suspension WiFi and the installer still proceeded working after wake up it then installed successfully and needed to reboot however when I clicked finish to reboot the screen disappeared and did nothing so after waiting for a little while I just used the left hand menu to restart on the system tray.
Plasma Basic
Reached grub all looks good and Trinity entries are still there. At first boot all the beginning [OK] checks passed I reached the first login screen then booted into the new Plasma Basic desktop. I first ran the df -h command to see the fresh install size it returned, 6.0G with nothing open I ran free -h, Mem total 3.7Gi used 1.1Gi free 1.3Gi shared 127Mi buff/cache 1.66Gi available 2.66Gi
I then installed Firefox via terminal afterword I opened youtube to play some videos, sound and video both work. I then proceeded to the system tray to delete my current WiFi connection and connected using the system tray it worked great with no errors Bluetooth also connected using the system tray.
Switching to Cloudflare DNS with the system tray GUI was easy and successful. I did a reboot WiFi and BT auto connected Cloudflare for families filtering still works.
I tested the sleep mode it’s been having issues with waking up on this model first the password screen was not responding to my clicking and the second time it froze on a black screen with only the white mouse moving for a few minutes then finally reached the login screen logged in successfully after.
All [OK] checks passed on shutdown.
Plasma Desktop
I installed it alongside again and after it finished this time the installer rebooted itself. I was greeted with the grub menu and all other entries still there after selecting the Plasma Desktop on first boot all [OK] checks passed. Reached login screen then entered the full desktop WiFi already connected and working. I ran the df -h to see the size, 9.8G then free -h, Mem total 3.7Gi used 1.2Gi free 1.4Gi shared 118Mi buff/cache 1.5Gi available 2.5Gi
I opened firefox to test out youtube both sound and video work. I then went on to the system tray to delete the current connection then reconnect WiFi using the system tray it was successful, BT also connected successfully I then connected to Cloudflare DNS it was simple and easy using the GUI in the system tray.
I tested the sleep mode while on Desktop, got stuck on a black screen for a few minutes then was freezing on and off once it reached the login but thankfully I was able to log back into the desktop eventually.
I did a reboot WiFi and BT auto connected successfully cloudflare for families is still working to.
All [OK] checks passed at shutdown
This was my experience while trying out Quarkos on this Dell I would highly recommend the Basic versions of either Trinity or Plasma the full desktops took on both nearly four times the amount of time to install and was much slower while using however Basic was much more snappy on the older laptop grade HDD in this funny old Dell could even improve more after some tweaks.
