How do memory requirements grow across 32bit Q4OS Trinity desktop versions ? We have performed testing that is quite fair across versions and also easily reproducible for anyone. The steps are as follows, exactly the same for all the systems under testing:
- Create 32bit guest machine in Virtualbox
Guest system: Debian 32bit
RAM: 512MB
- Boot Q4OS 32bit install-cd
- Proceed installation
- Reboot
- Don't apply any desktop profile
- Don't install VBox guest additions
- Disable welcome screen
- Reboot and login
- Let system settle down 2 minutes after reboot
- Run "htop" to get memory consuption
Results of comparing three 32bit Q4OS Trinity desktop editions:
Q4OS-1 Orion: 132 MB ... q4os-1.8-i386-instcd.r2.iso
Q4OS-4 Gemini: 149 MB ... q4os-4.13-i386-instcd.r1.iso
Q4OS-5 Aquarius: 160 MB ... q4os-5.8-i386-instcd.r2.iso
Conclusion:
We can observe some growth in memory requirements. However it remains quite acceptable given the overall development. The majority of this increase can be attributed to newer Debian kernels, which is expected when considering hardware advancements and the significant time span involved.
