Beginner's tip: use Synaptic to install Broadcom wi-fi drivers

I installed Q4OS 6 Andromeda with KDE Plasma on a Macbook Pro 2013 Retina today, and, as predicted by a live USB session, I could reach the internet via a USB LAN adapter but wi-fi did not work. I know I needed the proprietary DKMS driver, broadcom-sta-dkms, for the BCM4360 wi-fi card insted of the open source one, bcma-pca-bridge, and I read @bin's post "Aquarius Plasma on Intel Mac Air" (General Discussion 2024-11-15) and the reference in the replies to the Debian wl Wiki with interest.

I understand that a DKMS driver is rebuilt automatically in case of kernel upgrades so that's reassuring.

My tip is that if you find using the terminal confusing for this task due to the slightly varying advice on offer, you can search for broadcom-sta-dkms in Synaptic Package Manager (I downloaded this in Discover, but am not familiar enough with this yet to carry out the driver task in Discover), select it and mark all the dependencies etc. and install it there.

Optionally, following the Wiki's advice, if you want to check it's properly installed. look for "wl.ko" in the list produced after entering in bash - Konsole:

sudo find /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/updates

There seemed no need for the modprobe commands for unloading conflicting modules or loading the wl module.  I just rebooted and wi-fi was working. Very satisfying!

Everything went smoothly with the Andromeda installation and I am enjoying the new system.  (I am keeping Trinity on a machine with a CD/DVD transport). Thank you!

There was a quirk in that when I rebooted after the installation having taken the USB stick out (maybe I did this a fraction early) I immediately got a fast cascading screen with a list of numbers on the left and something about "squash" and "could not detect.." in each line. This just seemed to be continuous so I turned the power off and on and the reboot then proceeded normally.

Oh, and " and @ are reversed on the keyboard.  This is due to the Apple layout, I think, and I can live with it.
