My Samsung Notebook just refuses to boot from USB, I've tried all possible bios settings. So I want to try install from within windows. The winsetup 5.5r1 does not give the option of Acquarius and fails trying to install Andromeda.
Where can I find a winstall which will install Acquarius?

Did you really create a bootable USB? See https://www.q4os.org/dqa018.html#creat
Also check the MD5 sums or SHA256 sums to verify integrity of the downloaded .iso file.

To install Q4OS 5.8 (codename Aquarius) into Windows, use q4os-winsetup-5.8-r1.zip from the download page.
An installer for Q4OS 6 (codename Andromeda) into Windows is not yet available. Visit the download page from time to time

Yes, it will be available in about a month.

Sorry, I meant to say Acquarius 32 bit does not seem to be available from the installer. When running the installation it stops at "Could not retrieve the required disk image files", and looking at the log it seems that it stumbles because of SSL: CERTIFICARTE_VERIFY_FAILED.
i just assumed it was because of winn 8 and 32 bit.
Obviously I am a Linux newbie, my field is in bare metal embedded.
yes, I did create a true bootable image, verified and everything. In desperation I also tried a different brand of USB as well as a differerent kind of distro. USB is just ignored at boot - but reads fine from windows once running.

Unfortuntely, only 64bit installer for Windows is available.
SSL: CERTIFICARTE_VERIFY_FAILED
It would indicate you need update or install proper global certificates within Windows.

Ouch. I am afraid there is no way this 12 year old laptop is going to manage that. In fact I left on the shelves when it took hours at each win8 update back then. It is a nice machine, I would really like to linuxfy it. Any advice on how to make it boot from USB? -obviously I have tried all the obvious settings, but maybe there is a more systematic approach?

We agree, it would serve nicely with Linux.
Does this machine feature CD/DVD reader ? If so, you can create and boot from Q4OS DVD. However there must be option in BIOS to boot from USB, just search and browse all the options step by step.

Nice to get your 'moral' support : )
It does not have a CD/DVD reader (but it does have a CF reader). In bios I have set boot priority with USB at top, but it seems to ignore it. Is there a way to test this - some simple execute that would run from USB at boot? This way I can rule out if the q4os image file is the problem.

Yes, older but quality hardware usually works perfectly with Linux, unlike Windows ![]()
We would try another USB stick first, then try to boot another distro, for example older Q4OS-5 Aquarius or Debian - they are proven by time and plenty of users.

Try to boot with each available USB slot.
Can you give the exact reference of your notebook?

Only one USB slot.
Samsung Noteboot series 5
AMD A6
8 GB RAM
x64 based processor (oops- I assumed it was 32bit)

There are a lot of different series 5 models... the first one I found has 2 x USB 2.0, 2 x USB 3.0 and a 4 in 1 memory card reader; obviously not your model.
Since you have a CF card reader:
- was there a CF card inserted when you tried to boot on your USB? if so, remove it first and try again;
- create a bootable CF card and try to use it to boot.

@hciper Thanks for asking me to look up the specs, with the 64bit image it is now happily chrunching through the installation... fingers crossed.

Thanks for the help! 64bit did the trick. I am now running Acquarius and everything seems fine. Next is to figure out how to install software (Thonny) in this new environment.
-just figured; package manager is the thing.

Happy you found the solution.
But if your machine is 64 bits, it could be preferable to immediately make a fresh install again, this time with Q4OS 6 Andromeda.
I would also suggest to chose to create a separate partition on your disk for the /home directory during install.

I am on a steep learning curve. I will not rock the boat yet. Now I am trying to figure out how to add myself to the 'dialout' group, which is what Thonny complains must be done in order to allow it to open port /dev/ttyACM0. The sudo command just does nothing, it seems.
sudo usermod -a -G dialout $USER
Linux is a brave new world.
Update: now fixed. All good, ready for use in the field.
