You could also try to install "gtk3-nocsd" package and reboot. Twin windows manager will take control of all GTK3 windows, including simple-scan, in addition to GTK3 decorations.

I might do that! As it is, right now, something that was changed is preventing me from simply logging out and back in -- I HAVE to reboot. Thanks.
EDIT: as noted in the windows positioning ticket, installing the "twin windows" manager works for simple-scan, and the preferences window actually looks better with the gtk-theme-name=Q4OSWIN10 restored in settings.ini for gtk3.0 .
OH YEAH -- the issue with not being able to simply log out and log back in is miraculously fixed.

...there is a problem with its sub-menus. When I click its "hamburger" menu to set the preferences, the preferences window opens with no windowing "decorations" or controls. So once it's up, it can't be closed ...
We have fixed this issue, so the Simple-scan preferences will display as expected as soon as you perform regular system update.

THANKS, @q4osteam! So after the update, I can get rid of the various hacks? (gtk3-nocsd, gtk3.0 settings.ini stuff)

Simple-scan preferences will display as expected with the close button visible. The fix doesn't solve windows placement and positioning of Gnome applications under Trinity desktop.

Thanks. So (1) only if there is another app window ngeed for the gtk3-nocsd fix would it be necessary, (2) but I CAN get rid of the gtk-theme-name hack, and finally (3) I just had an update notification and did the updates -- is a reboot required after these? (Don't know for sure if this fix was in it, but I'll check.)

Not absolutely necessary (your system will continue to work), just safer if you received security updates, or convenient if the update brings features you are looking for.

The fix is low-level. It amends the entire Gtk3 theme, so the impact is general to all Gtk3 applications not Simple-scan only.

Please see my other post -- the one about caps lock -- did the gtk3 change affect that as well? Also interesting, my Vivaldi browser now does not show the "back" arrow, only the forward arrow. Thankfully, Alt-Left arrow still works.

Likely some unintended setting.
