Firefox does not always behave as it should

I am pleased to be an ex-Linux Mint and new-ish (two months) convert to Q4OS.
From day one I have noticed that Firefox does not always behave as it should.
I acknowledge that Chromium is the Q4OS default browser, but I am a very long time Firefox user and Chrome is Google, and I want them out of my life.

I have experienced several occasions when there are buttons on web pages that need to be clicked, but when I do so absolutely nothing happens.
And in the same vein, there should have been a button to be clicked, but it was not there!

Using Konqueror on those occasions has got me through, but not today when trying to use the Australia Post web site.

I keep my computer up-to-date. My version of Firefox in use today is 128.10.1esr (64-bit).

I searched the forum, but did not find similar reports of Firefox peculiarities. Surely I can't be the only person experiencing this?

Re: Firefox does not always behave as it should

I havent had any issues with Firefox at all and Ive got close to 20 systems running with it. Maybe instead of the ESR version you should try the standard version and see if that helps. Im in quite a few forums and honestly havent heard any issues such as you describe.

Which version of Q4OS are you using and what type of hardware?  Have you had this issue with any other browser assuming youve tried any other browsers.
If it occurs in more than Firefox it could be a system issue.
Turning off hardware acceleration in Firefox performance settings(in general section, go to performance settings, unclick performance setting box, youll see hardware accel unclick that box) many times will help with some issues.

Welcome to the forums!  smile

You have installed Firefox ESR apparently. We would recommend you to install and use Firefox release from the Q4OS software center, version 138.0.4 at the moment.

Please post an example of such a page with direct link so we could test it. A screenshot of the proper page layout would be helpful too.

Re: Firefox does not always behave as it should

I have used ESR for - well I cannot remember how long, it's been that long.
Never seen the kind of issue you describe.
Just checked the Australia Post web site and it seems to be absolutely fine. Actually better than the Royal Mail site here in the UK.
When you migrated over from Mint - I assume the Ubuntu 2x.x.series - did you copy over your ~/.mozilla profile folder or have you started from scratch with ESR?
If I get funny browser issues my first action is to rename ~/.mozilla to ~/.mozilla.old and then start Firefox. That will create a completely new config file.
If you still have the same problem then it will be down to something else.
We don't know anything about your machine so it would help if you could open Konsole and run

inxi -Fxxxmprz

and copy paste back the results.

Re: Firefox does not always behave as it should

Quick responses, thank you. And slow responses from me because I have unexpectedly been away from home.

Q4OS only offered me the FlatPak version of Firefox from the Discover Software Centre. No thank you. I am aware that I am swimming upstream, that FlatPak is touted as the future, but I can’t see the benefits for me. It only appears to be better for the developers who supply a massive download for every Linux version, while providing no automatic update facility. There will be other opinions, and I am not wanting to start a fight.

Having installed Synaptic, I then searched for Firefox and was offered Firefox-ESR (which I had never used, or even heard of). Since from Linux Mint I was used to be using whatever Synaptic offers, I did not think twice before installation.

Following the suggestions from CROSSCOURT and Q4OSTEAM I deleted it using Synaptic. Using the information at:    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/in … efox-linux   I followed the INSTALL FIREFOX .DEB PACKAGE FOR DEBIAN-BASED DISTRIBUTIONS (RECOMMENDED) instructions and Firefox 139.0.1 (64-bit) is now installed.

Perhaps I am now back on track. We’ll see! For the time being this issue can be marked as RESOLVED.

Yes, it's a way to install FF release on your system. However if you install it from the Q4OS Software center as we recommended, you would achieve the same more easily. No Flatpak version ofcourse.

We can also recommend you to apply the Basic profile upon the next Q4OS installation, so you get Flatpak free system prepared to install additional end user applications like Firefox. As soon as you settle up with your setup, get Snapshot profile, so you can apply it on future installations. See Desktop profiler documentation https://www.q4os.org/dqa016.html
