Hey all. I'm running q4os 5.7 6.1.0-27 trinity edition usually without any problems, but when I updated my system to 5.7 6.1.0-31, sometimes it doesnt load the trinity desktop, sometimes it does load trinity and it works just fine, and when it loaded just today it refused to load the sound driver and proceeded to not load trinity at all on reboot.
to clarify, it boots and loads trinity just fine on 6.1.0-27, but does not on 5.7 6.1.0-31 I have just gotten the ability to update to 5.8, but i'm scared i will lose 6.1.0-27 in my advanced boot options. In the boot log when loading 6.1.0-31, it looks like it loads everything until it has to load trinity desktop.
I would send a log here for 6.1.0-31 failing to load the desktop, but the whole system hangs on a black screen with a blinking white line.
I am using a laptop with the proprietary nvidia driver.

Hello, you are now allowed to post links and attach files, so please edit the OP and update link. The issue you reported sounds a bit like a progressive hardware problem. The current kernel version is 6.1.0-32 on Q4OS 5.8, so we would recommend you to upgrade the system first and see what happens. We have no indications that Trinity desktop wouldn't load.

Thank you. I've edited it. If I were to upgrade the system, would I still have kernel 6.1.0-27 as an option to boot from? I hope that the new kernel will work, but I would like something that I know works as a failsafe. If not, how can I make sure it will always be there to boot from?

You didnt mention which Nvidia driver is being used. Typically the 470 series drivers are recommended for the Kepler based K1000M Quadro.
Some have mentioned the 426.50 driver has worked for them.

I tried doing 'nvidia-smi' to see the driver version, but the output said this.
"NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running."
when I installed q4os I just used the graphical 'install nvidia drivers' button on the welcome screen. From my menu, the nvidia x server settings are called "Nvidia X server settings (Tesla 470 version)" - so I think the driver version is 470-something.

Yes, unless you remove it.

You can use the app cpu-x to see more info on the graphics card and what specific driver its using. Based on your post, the 470 driver should work. Originally the 390 driver was the best option but they arent supported anymore in the 6.xx kernels. The 470 driver isnt perfect and technically according to Nvidia doesnt support the K1000m, but in fact the K1000M is nothing but a modified GT 640.
Linux is slowly moving away from legacy hardware and its going to get tougher to get certain gpus to work.

Thank you both for your help! I updated and that fixed it. I don't know what happened with kernel 6.1.0-31, but 6.1.0-32 is working fine and dandy. Updating also made nvidia-smi work, so i can say i am on driver version 470.256.02 for sure. Thanks for your time
