Q4OS for Windows boot fail

I attempted to install q4os-winsetup-5.5-r1.1.zip on to a SATA drive from Windows 10. I got the following error message when trying to boot after install. (see attachment) Strange thing is older versions worked fine, just this version seems to be a problem. Disabling secure boot makes no difference.

Side note, I noticed q4os windows setup does not like nvme drives, might have something to do with intel controller, not sure.

Q4OS for Win supports secure boot, so you don't need to disable it.

Did older version work on that same machine ?
What version exactly, would you specify, so we can find a difference ?
The error looks like Debian kernel doesn't have some drivers for the hardware in question. Q4OS uses just the default Debian kernel.

Why do you think so ?
Q4OS supports NVME disks, however it varies by hardware, would you post an error message and NVME device specs, so we can investigate please ?
We have successfully tested the setup on multiple machines with NVME disks.

Re: Q4OS for Windows boot fail

Regarding the nvme issue:

Got the following error message when using nvme drive. "Invalid argument Host filesystem not found, make Windows partition accessible" No error with sata drive. Windows 10 is installed on nvme drive, maybe q4os does not being installed along side windows?

Others have had similar issue
https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4687
https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3728

I got 5.4 to work with sata drive. For some reason 5.5 is giving me problems. Same machine. The only difference is I switched to a new wireless adapter.

Re: Q4OS for Windows boot fail

The OP's issue isn't most likely related to the NVME drive, as they are not the other links you listed above. Q4OS for Windows setup supports NVME drives, we did a few successful installs on such hardware.

We can see the message

.. ZSTD-compressed data is corrupt ..

so would suspect some hardware problem. Did you try to reinstall Q4OS on that machine ? The wireless adapter type has no effect on the first boot stage.

The 5.5 version uses updated Debian kernel, so it could be a clue. In anyway thanks for reporting.

Yes tried reinstall on same machine. Where is old versions of q4os for windows? Can't find on Sourceforge.

Re: Q4OS for Windows boot fail

First make sure you have downloaded the latest Winsetup installer "q4os-winsetup-5.5-r1.1.zip" and check the MD5sum here https://www.q4os.org/downloads1.html . If you cannot install with the latest version, proceed with the older version, see below.

blackwire22 wrote:

It's not available directly, however you can use it this way:
First download two files:
https://q4os.sourceforge.io/download/q4 … 5.4-r1.zip
https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/f … oop.img.xz

Unzip the zipped installer and run from windows "cmd" command prompt:

q4os-winsetup.exe --dimagepath=c:\full_path_to_the_image\q4os5b-x64-loop.img.xz

For more info about possible installer options please read https://github.com/hakuna-m/wubiuefi/wi … arameters-

See also https://github.com/hakuna-m/wubiuefi/wiki/FAQ

Paste a result here please.

Re: Q4OS for Windows boot fail

Ok I got the ZSTD-compressed data is corrupt message to go away by disabling Windows Defender. But have run into new problems, error message says cannot find kernel now.

Re: Q4OS for Windows boot fail

Download failed at your side for some reason, maybe network connection has failed, see the message:

08-09 13:24 DEBUG downloader: download finished (read 31457280 bytes)

The correct download size is 1118322668 bytes
Try it once again and check for download errors. You could also download the file manually https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/f … oop.img.xz and install it with "--dimagepath" switch as described above.

Re: Q4OS for Windows boot fail

Finally solved problem. The new network adapter was dropping connection which corrupted download. Switching to old adapter made error go away and q4os boot normally, although still only on SATA drive. Thanks Q4OS Team for your help, couldn't have figured it out without you.
