i836 install fails

Trying to instal Q4OS on a relatively old machine. K6-2. Made installation disk 32bit i386. Installer fails loading kernel with error message cmov missing, use correct kernel. Doble checked, I definitely use 32bit i386 image on a 32bit i586 machine. Is install kernel really compiled for i386? Or maybe i586 or even 686 is requred. Checked the docs but could not found actual architecture supported.

32bit Q4OS 4 Gemini is compiled for 686 and newer instruction set. You could try to install 32bit Q4OS 3 Centaurus https://www.q4os.org/downloads3.html , what is old-stable edition with support up to July 2024

Thank you. Will definitely try. Also I learned that K-6 is trying to "pose as 686" but actually is not one really. Lots of misleading information about this particula cpu.

Not quite. The K-6(II, III) was Pentium compatible, but never attempted to have any compatibility for 686, which was only introduced (on a consumer level) very near the end of the line for the K6 family. AMD did attempt to support almost all the instruction set that was implemented for Pentium, but strictly speaking, the hard line full support they're still considered to be only 586-compatible processors (aka - pentium). The missing CMOV instructions were introduced in said 686 instructions, which is the Pentium Pro and Penitum 2, 3 & 4. So no, at no time has the K6 line ever been claimed by AMD to be 686 instruction compatible. The Athlon family was created for that.

Running a K6-2, its been a long time since Ive owned one running on a socket 7 board. It was released back in mid-1998 so definitely a very old piece of hardware.

I don't remember what board it was, but there were some boards that had onboard cache, so if you put a K6-III in those it would actually have 3 levels of cache much like later, much higher performance chips (by the time of the release of the K6-III, the K6 line was considered an entry level cpu as the Athlons had supplanted them as the "premium" CPU), and they were indeed capable of keeping up with much newer hardware despite their extremely aging design.
