Proton VPN disconnecting

Proton VPN is disconnecting when attempting to connect to any of their servers.  The vpn's GUI log claims the login credentials are wrong, but I log in with the same credentials for all my devises so I know that is incorrect info.  I've noticed the login procedure has an extra step with linux which states,

Authenticate Proton VPN US-FREE#7
Provide the secrets for the VPN connection 'Proton VPN US-FREE#7':
Password:

The phrase "provide the secrets for the VPN connection"  seems very suspicious.  Any thoughts on (1) is this valid, and (2) if so why is Proton VPN not connecting to any server.  And, yes, I've verified I am connected to the internet.

Thanks.

Re: Proton VPN disconnecting

Why does that seem suspicious?  You think a VPN should connect without a password of some type?  NOT getting asked for credentials would be far more suspicious to me...
