System update message

When I perform a "apt update" the message at the end states it is not valid.

: The repository 'http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-security Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Data from such a repository can't be authenticated and is therefore potentially dangerous to use.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
E: Failed to fetch http://deb.debian.org/debian/dists/bull … 4/Packages  404  Not Found [IP: 151.101.126.132 80]
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Can you tell me what the cause is?

Re: System update message

Outdated form of the line.  With bullseye, they changed the security so that it should be

deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bullseye-security main

Notice it's no longer /debian, but /debian-security

Re: System update message

Why would Q40s be trying to use an incorrect version and not be updated to receive the latest proper version?

No idea, was this install upgraded from an earlier version or a conversion from a "basic" Debian install or anything?  I'm not aware of any of the install images having this set wrong, but it's possible early versions might have.

Re: System update message

Yes, as @tlmiller76 wrote, the initial Q4OS-4 installation media had the Debian security repository set up like this and it worked too. Anyway, if you upgrade your system:
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt dist-upgrade
the repositories should be patched automatically using the q4os-base package manager update script, so you only need to do this twice to get the updates from the fixed Debian repository:
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt dist-upgrade
The repositories should now be fixed.

Anyway, the current Q4OS installation images have all the repositories updated for quite a long time.

What program is your image a screenshot of? I don't recognize Update Manager which is Q4OS' dedicated tool, and is available from the Software Centre.

By the way, Update Manager indeed offers today a large number of updates, including logrotate and nano.

Re: System update message

I notice that the listing mentions en_CA

There have been all sorts of issues with internet in Canada - now resolved. https://www.theregister.com/2022/07/08/ … rs_outage/

May be worth trying again?

Re: System update message

The screen shot is a picture of q40s update GUI. I took a shot of 1 of the many updates available for update at that time. The updates icon can be found on the bottom of the task bar.

I do not think the Rogers outage affected the update but it is still occurring as of 10-July-2022. I have also defaulted the etc/apt/sourcelist as it was blank originally. What is a release file?

Re: System update message

Why don't you just manually edit the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/20-debian.list (I'm not on q4os so I may have the number of the file wrong) file to be correct?  It's literally adding 9 letters.

Re: System update message

I will need to see the values to expect in that file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/20-debian.list for q4os as I do not understand why this issue occurred. Can anyone provide a actual working q4os 20-debian.list file ?

Re: System update message

I literally said what it was in the FIRST post.

Change the line that contains the bold section:

deb blahblahblah/debian bullseye-security mainblahblahblah
to
deb blahblahblah/debian-security bullseye-security mainblahblahblah

Re: System update message

The file in /etc/apt/sources already has that entry and it does not work.

Here are the entries in the file.

deb https://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ bullseye-security main
deb-src https://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ bullseye-security main

deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye main
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-secur … e-security main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bullseye-security maindeb https://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ bullseye-security main
deb-src https://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ bullseye-security main

Can someone provide  their etc/apt/sources.list  and the /var/apt/lib/lists ?

Re: System update message

Yes, but the sources.list file should be EMPTY on q4os.  As I said, that entry would be on the /etc/apt/sources.list/20_debian.list

NOT /etc/apt/sources.list, this file should be entirely empty.

On my system, etc/apt/sources.list is empty (and unmodified since 21 Nov 2021, probably date of Gemini install) and /var/apt/lib/lists doesn't exist.

On the other hand, I have only 3 uncommented lines in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/20_debian.list (also unmodified since the same date):

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ bullseye main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security/ bullseye-security main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ bullseye-updates main contrib non-free

The screen shot is a picture of q40s update GUI. I took a shot of 1 of the many updates available for update at that time. The updates icon can be found on the bottom of the task bar.

I asked because I was believing a third party program (if not yourself?) could have corrupted some original repositories infos on your system. I do not see any "q40s update GUI" button on my task bar. Only when updates are available, I see an icon looking like an orange or red gear, and the program that it launches to make the updates on my system is not the one you are using (see screen capture). The command line to launch it is

/opt/program_files/q4os-update-manager/bin/updatemgr.exu

Please, read what tlmiller76 and me have written this morning.

I am rrunning Plasma too. What is the problem with French translation? At least you can see the layout is obviously not the same (whence third party program? ... apt lists corrupted? ... Already said all this).

Re: System update message

I have corrected the problem by correcting the repository in /etc/apt/sources.list.d

The original had all entries remarked out. Can anyone suggest a reason why this would occur ?

### Q4OS essential repositories

##deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ bullseye main contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye-security main contrib non-free
##deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security/ bullseye-security main contrib non-free

##deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ bullseye-updates main contrib non-free

##deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ bullseye-proposed-updates main contrib non-free
##deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ bullseye-proposed-updates main contrib non-free

# mirror chooser service - experimental
##deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye main contrib non-free
##deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye main contrib non-free

I changed the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/20_debian.list to the following to correct the issue.

### Q4OS essential repositories

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ bullseye main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security/ bullseye-security main contrib non-free

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ bullseye-updates main contrib non-free

I have also noticed that the files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d below, have the extension of .saved. What would cause that change ?

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 129 Jul 10 22:49 10_q4os.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 129 Jul 10 22:49 10_q4os.list.save

Re: System update message

I think there is a bug in the discovery software sources. When I open Debian software sources in Discovery it has custom selected for download from, most likely due to the manual change I made to /etc/apt/sources.list.d. When I change it to Main server it puts the following information into the sources.list.d which gives the same error when a sudo apt get update is performed.

### Q4OS essential repositories

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye-security main contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye-updates contrib non-free

see enclosed

We can confirm quite a serious Debian bug. Plasma Discover and "software-properties-kde" package can really modify Debian security repository an incorrect way, resulting in broken Apt update mechanism. This issue is easily reproducible on a plain Debian installation exactly the same way, so it's Debian upstream bug. The only way to get correct repository back, is to fix it manually in the Apt sources list. Unfortunately, we are not able to fix these Debian packages, so we must wait for Debian upstream fix.
