Updated, rebooted and kernel panic

Hi everyone. I update the system to 4.10 32bits some days ago and worked really good. Today I just installed some updates like usual with terminal and with the automatic update tool. Right after that I rebooted the system and it shows a kernel panic error. "Kernel panic-not syncing: attempted to kill the idle task!"

Re: Updated, rebooted and kernel panic

Update: It seems to be the latest kernel 5.10.0-17-686-pae thats giving me this problem. Other kernels such as 5.10.0-16-686-pae and 5.10.0-13-686-pae work just fine.
Maybe a bug with the new kernel?
I'll keep using 5.10.0-16 for now, will it be fixed in later kernels? smile

As Q4OS uses Debian kernel, it depends on Debian upstream.

Re: Updated, rebooted and kernel panic

Same problem on my 32 bit Toshiba 3000 RAM 1024 Mb when upgrading to Gemini 4.10 last night. Q4OS 3.9.1 still works fine when reboot and no panic kernel. Old computers like mine gets a gemini 4.1 panic kernel without previous warning because of upgrading even at minimal resources once rebooting. Too much debian  11 kernel for old processors I think. I hope somebody helps how to fix or avoid this upgrade.

Hi! I see you are from Spain too smile
I got some help in the debian forums but I still need to test the solution they provided
I will try it when I get the chance maybe that helps you too.

Re: Updated, rebooted and kernel panic

Hi Irina 060, I updated kernel until 5.10-16 and works fine. Q4OS also was updated at Gemini 4.10-n1. I suspect Q4OS team still has not solved the issue why last -17 version is avaliable for old PIII machines without SSE2 instructions. Gemini 4.10-n1 makes still possible to correct pc boot, works. I think we must stay tuned at -16 version until this issue is solved to know where or how failed and restoring again.

Re: Updated, rebooted and kernel panic

In my opinion, if you have an old PC, it is better not to update to latest kernels. Just stay on old kernel, which works fine for you. New kernels bring improvements for new computers, like new Ryzens, old PCs do not benefit from installing newest kernels.
Here is written how to hold package in order to prevent it from being automatically updated: https://ostechnix.com/hold-or-prevent-a … an-ubuntu/

Before asking for help please read this topic: https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502   If you have problems with WiFi network, try to install the Network Manager using Q4OS Software Centre.

Re: Updated, rebooted and kernel panic

I understand but I find it exciting to tune old pcs to its maximum potential. In this case it is only an error that will get fixed according to link I send previously. I will probably hold onto the latest possible kernel until SSE2 is absolutly required which would mean dropping support for most 32bit cpus. I know that day will come but it will take a while, in the meantime I will enjoy all the updates I can get. To be completly honest, I admire the support for old hardware, Im thankful smile

Re: Updated, rebooted and kernel panic

[SOLVED] Today I see the new update linux-pae-5.0.18, I've download and installed new Debian kernel from Synaptic (From Updater Manager can be not completed properly, almost not my computer). Only needs to push Replace button to all options you can find while upgrading all packets you have on queue. Works fine again, no problems while booting found. No traces or problems found about last -17 version.

I think the problem has been fixed by now. SSE2 is not required for Q4OS installed on old computers yet, these are good news for old PIII 1000Mhz.
