Install Problem

I tried to install the latest version of Q4OS from a live USB. The target was a populated partition, which I directed to be formatted ext4. The installation stopped in about three minutes. On a cold reboot I found that I had no bootloader. The message was "Unknown file system." I had to switch to another HD to get another OS going\, so I can write this.

Re: Install Problem

With that .iso there was no message, just a blank screen. Just now I downloaded the .iso from the Q4OS site. The installation stopped at 20% of the "installing filesystems" stage, stayed there for about seven minutes, so I gave up.
By the way, I'm really appreciative of your quick response to my plea.

Re: Install Problem

That looks more like a hardware, or hardware related issue, as we are not able to reproduce that. You should let the setup more time to complete its tasks, seven minutes could be insufficient for older hardware.

Re: Install Problem

Thanks. I'll play with it and see what happens. I'm eager to get the full experience of Q4OS.

Re: Install Problem

I remember I encountered a similar problem (no bootloader) in my first attempts to install Q4OS.
At that time, I experimented (I did things without undersanding what I was doing) and an EFI partition was created on my hard drive.
I guess it was the reason why the bootloader was not installed properly.
I then removed all the patitions (using gparted live) and I reinstalled Q4OS. Then there were only 2 partitions (ext4 on /dev/sda1 and linux-swap on /dev/sda2) and everything worked well.
At that time, I found that the decription on the disk partitionning during Q4OS installation was not clear, probably because I had a very bad knowledge of what kind of partition I has to use.
I hope this can help.

Re: Install Problem

@davec51
The symptoms you described in your original post are consistent with a failing hard drive.

I suggest you boot your computer with Parted Magic on a USB stick. Then run the Disk Health utility, or else download the disk tools provided by your hard drive manufacturer.

I had similar problems this past week and worse. Turns out the hard drive was in the process of failing.
