Wine.

Here is another Whine about Wine, and why I have problems with it.  When it does run, I can't install Win programs on it. I don't wish for anyone to pound their keyboard with a long explanation about how to make Wine work. Could some one point me to an online resource. Every time I type wine into a search engine, I end up looking at wines of the world.  There must be a FAQ somewhere.

Thanks everyone. I'm off to get some cheese to go with my whine.

Re: Wine.

Thanks Dh48 for the reference. I looked at the offerings from WineHQ. Looks mighty interesting, but I am not well equipped (knowledge wise) to compile the binary. I'll do some study on that later.

Re: Wine.

Try installing winetricks package.  It's supposed to make Wine easier to use.  I have no personal experience, I've never really tried to get Wine to work myself, so just going off of what I've read in reviews.

Re: Wine.

The simple way to get used to using Wine is to right click on the installer (.exe) and select open with other program, then just type wine and hit enter. That should kick off the process. After that the right click should offer you Wine as an 'Open with' option - depends on file manager.
The programs should then show in your Menu under Wine>>>>>
Be aware that not all windows programs work or even install.
Winetricks is a tool for installing additional windows libraries - the infamous .net, various dlls etc.

Re: Wine.

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense to me. It seems that the graphics program I want to install Page Plus 9, is a stubborn lil beast. I don't think it's possible to install it. Howsumever, I'm not giving up just yet (I'm even more stubborn).  Page Plus is from Serif.com in the U.K.

Re: Wine.

I used to use PP back in the 90's - it was when there was still lots of choice in the budget DTP world!!!

From what I can see PP9 doesn't play well with WINE. v5 yes, but not later.

There are alternatives in the Linux world, but it depends on what you want to do. Scribus is the obvious close relative. It's a cross between early Pagemaker and Quark Xpress. You can do a lot with Inkscape for graphics work, I have used the Draw module in Libreoffice for all sorts of odd stuff... smile

Re: Wine.

I tried Scribus, and Inkscape. Also, I used LibreOffice Draw. I did some okay vector graphics with them. PP in my mind worked more intuitively with me. I'll Wine v.5, and see how it goes.

Many thanks again for your time and suggestions. My next project is on the back burner, called "Waiting on Q4os 4.0."

Re: Wine.

Well, if you have PP 5 it was reported as Gold status in WineDB so it should be OK - but you do need the key for it to work.

Re: Wine.

I have PP9, with the key, and the registration number. I'm going to try it again.  I do have Windows 10 on my desktop, so I least ways works on that machine.

NEXT DAY: I got Wine installed. Now all I need to do is find the installation CD for PP9.  (Franky sobs in frustration)

Many thanks for your help. I'm going to curl up with a bottle of Crown Royal Rye.
