apple blue tooth keyboard not pairing

have an old mac pro with q4os, went to use an apple bluetooth keyboard but wasnt able to.
the system recognizes the kb but when i click connect it sits there for a while and then says it cant connect.
when im running mac os or win 8.1 there is no problem.
any ideas ?
