Office Suites - Again!

Hi All,

Mini survey - what are people using for work / office apps on Q4OS?

I just tried re-visiting WPS and apart from a libpng fault which was easily cured it seg faults and not loadable.

I looked up online / Synaptic search and see Caligra, Libre and OnlyOffice

Any comments / user experiences etc?

Cheers

Re: Office Suites - Again!

You could check a lightweight TDE office suite 'koffice-trinity' as well.
$ sudo apt install koffice-trinity

Re: Office Suites - Again!

I only use spreadsheets and usually install gnumeric as it fits my needs, pretty light weight and functions well enough for what I do.

LibreOffice is what I usually install for other people though as it has everything and is available through normal debian (main) repository, thus keeping maintenance to a minimum (most desirable option when providing support for them wink ).

Re: Office Suites - Again!

I use OnlyOffice most often, although I also use FreeOffice and LibreOffice some.  Completely gave up on WPS office.  While years ago it was probably the best linux office suite IMO, it hasn't had a realistic update in a couple years, and the issue with the outdated libpng dependency was reported multiple times by multiple users 3+ years ago, and they have yet to even fix it, so WPS I foresee becoming more and more unstable as time passes as it seems there is absolutely no actual development still going on for the linux version.

Re: Office Suites - Again!

Sadly the days of the installed office suite are pretty well over for the casual/non-business user. Take the current generation in school using Chromebooks and Google Docs - they are so used to it that the answer would be - why bother?

For business users, the are all surgically connected to MS Office products. As a result any alternative office product must be able to work with it's xml swamped output. Never going to happen. Office products cost real beans to develop and freeloading linux users won't pay so - why bother.

I would add at this stage that I use paid version of Softmaker Office as I had no choice other than using MS Office under Wine, or using Windows. However that is their old version and I don't intend to cough up the same again for the latest as the old one still works fine - or there's always Google Docs.......

Have also a payed key for Softmaker - at least they are still doing Linux versions. Mine is an older version also but may take a look at it!

I found the trial of their new version very stodgy and sluggish in use - OK it's full 64 bit, but for my use - meh!

Re: Office Suites - Again!

I haven't had any issues with the performance of SoftMaker, and I'm using it (in freeoffice guise, although I do have the paid 2018 version on a few of my machines) on my Chuwi (Celeron N3450 w/ 6 GB  ram) which definitely isn't exactly a processing powerhouse.

Re: Office Suites - Again!

I've been using Microsoft Office since I know I exist. When I decided to switch to Q4OS I was worrying that LibreOffice would not be suitable for me. But, boy was I wrong! Well, to be fair, I only tried Writer, but I'm pretty sure LibreOffice will be fine for me in the long run. I had also tried WPS Office once or twice, but it didn't feel very "natural" due to its lack of language support for many languages.

Re: Office Suites - Again!

I use WPS Office because I think there's no Office suite better than M$ Office, and I love the way that WPS 'mimics' that. :v

I found a solution to use WPS, just installing QT4 Config and setting QT style to GTK+ by default.

Re: Office Suites - Again!

I've only used LibreOffice since the OO/LO fork.  Works perfectly, but I do still have to use Microsoft Access for some of my database work because of some features that just aren't available in opensource alternatives.

I currently have LibreOffice 5 installed in Q4OS 2.6 and other than theming issues, it's working fine.

Re: Office Suites - Again!

Surprisingly, WPS updated their linux suite recently.  They actually fixed the several YEAR old bug on debian-based distro's with looking for an outdated version of libpng.  Maybe they haven't completely abandoned linux after all...although I wouldn't get my hopes up too far.

So they have - thanks for the heads-up!

I hope they've also fixed the printing problems with font kerning being lost in transit - will give it a whirl.

Re: Office Suites - Again!

Well, the kerning is just as bad as always so out you go WPS!

BTW I hope anyone using it has looked at the EULA - particularly in view of China's general approach to sucking up data wherever possible - makes you wonder.

Re: Office Suites - Again!

The funniest part of their EULA is that they specifically say that if you're running it on linux, you are ONLY allowed to run it on

OS: Linux OS produced by China brand enterprises, such as Ubuntu or Ubentu Kylin, Deepin, NeoKylin, NFS China, and New Start

KOffice IS ABSOLUTELY GREAT!

Yeah, I know that there's Calligra. And it's OK. But for serious office related tasks KOffice has everything that you want and need.

Re: Office Suites - Again!

I must admit, KOffice is pretty good!

As far as office suites go, especially on a TDE setup, you have everything at your fingertips.

Re: Office Suites - Again!

KOffice in Plasma may be OK, but the old Trinity/KDE3.x version is just not worth the effort.
Unstable is a kind way of putting it - always was.

Re: Office Suites - Again!

Koffice in Plasma has many issues and honestly just doesnt stack up to LibreOffice or FreeOffice. Many good articles online that compare them.

LibreOffice. I have it on over a hundred office computers and it exceeds the needs of all users.
