Synaptic Package Manager

This may be due to the resolution I have my display set at, but when there is a long list in Synaptic the last item has the left/right scroll bar cover it when you try to select it for more information. For example if you list "all" and go to the bottom of the list, where "zzuf" is located (no, I'm not installing it! Just an example) the scroll bar covers it and you cannot select it. By stretching the window, so that all text will fit on one line without being truncated the problem goes away.
BTW: my display resolution is set to 1024 X 768

Not a big problem, just found it interesting.

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

Yup, a lot of software is getting to the point where it doesn't work very well at a ????x768 resolution anymore.  Part of the reason I'm such a snob for high res laptops.

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

Kinda what I thought. But it wouldn't happen if they put a blank entry at the bottom. smile

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

I try to stick to 1280x1024 at least to avoid problems but a lot of sites and apps still do fine with 1024x768.

by far the vast majority still do fine.  But given what a common resolution 1366x768 still is, it's odd because I started noticing ~5 years ago that a few things didn't work well at that resolution.

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

This isn't really a screen resolution problem as it will happen when the package manager is not full screen, if you move the mouse away for a few seconds the bottom scroll bar disappears and you can see the last entry, it does however come back if you move your mouse to try and select it. On my system it is possible to select it by moving the mouse to the very top of that line just above the scroll bar and selecting it, but I would say it is a bug in synaptic.

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

I will have to check on other machine, but given that it happens when not full screen I can't see how it would be due to screen size, but I guess we will find out by the end of this thread smile

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

@JimW - by the sound of it, 1024x768 is not the native resolution.

So, I'm guessing you're changing it through the TDEResizeRotate thingy.

If that is the case then I'd suggest you locate the xxxxx.rc file in your home that is being updated by that tool and copy it to the same location in /root

Synaptic does not recognise a number of local user interface changes and I'm just wondering if it is also ignoring the resolution in some way as well - just a thought smile

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

@bin - I set resolution by right-click on desktop - Configure Desktop - Display - Screen Size

But, like I said, it is not a big problem. If I had wanted to install zzuf I would open a terminal and do an apt-get.

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

Right - back on my Scorpion machine now.

The effect that you're seeing is due to some new fading scrollbar thing. It's not the screen resolution, it's just the size of the window.

If any part of the text in any item in the Description column is covered then you get the horizontal scroll bar fading in when the mouse is moved over the pane - no matter where in the package list you may be.

Not been able to work out where this comes from yet - possibly GTK?

I checked on my desktop machine (1920x1080) and still shows this effect, cant explain why you don't see it... I'm using the debonair theme, but will have a go at changing back to default and see if it still happens.

EDIT :

Happens with default theme too.

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

I use KDE classic and have tried other themes and it also happens.

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

It's nothing to do with KDE or Trinity or screen resolution or screen size.

It is simply down to whether the Synaptic window is wide enough to display all the text in the Description column.

If it is not then sideways scrolling is required/implemented and fades in when mouse is hovered over the listing pane.

The side scroll bar then covers whatever entry happens to be at the bottom of the list.

If the entry in which you are interested happens to be at bottom then it is obscured unless the window can be made wide enough to uncover the longest description, or you re-size the columns by dragging the header dividers so that you achieve the same result.

I suppose that technically it's a bug - but it is nothing to do with Trinity - so it's either GTK or Synaptic. My guess is it's a new do-dah that's been introduced in GTK3 but life's too short....

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

Amen ... some folks simply have waaay too much time on their hands

Although, in some perverse way, it might be construed as a bassackwards, Q4O/S compliment

Kudos to the Q4O/S Devs - simply love their KISS approach

Regards

Jack

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

As I stated in my original post - not a big issue, just something I found to be rather odd. As for time, how long does it take to do a search for something in synaptic and scroll to the bottom of the list? smile

Re: Synaptic Package Manager

It depends Jim where it is in the list or the amount of search results.   Scrolling to the bottom of the list manually takes awhile but not a lifetime.
