Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Sorry CC, but do we really need so many threads topics on the same subject? wouldn't it be better to have all information on this issue in the same thread topic?

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Ive actually had people who contacted me wanting info on performance tests and others who wanted  simple info on the situation/whats being done by the OEMs, so I posted these for those requests.

Not trying to splash the site with a lot of threads but sometimes people dont want to wade thru long threads and want to read a single post with what they need.

The devs/mods can do whatever they like, with the threads.

On the flip side these threads will attract some posts and readers which isnt a bad thing.

Feel free to report it if you like but really dont see the harm to be honest.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

I'm not going to report anything, I was making a comment from a personal point of view, nothing to do with the devs. Personally I would rather read one interesting thread with all the information in one place, but it's a free world and you can do what you think best.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

I come from sites like Anandtech and Arstechnica so Im use to seeing different threads handling specific parts of a larger issue, its commonplace. Granted this isnt a large forum but sometimes with complex issues, having separate threads on certain aspects makes it easier to comment and follow.  Appreciate your patience.

...and of course this is going to provide a whole new gamut of 'Microsoft Support' calls - presumably they'll be using the 'ISP Support' version as the Spectre/Meltdown issue impacts Apple, MS, Linux and Android....

Then there'll be the 'Calling from your bank as your computer is affected by Meltdown/Spectre.....

Make sure to update Firefox to 57.04 and a patch should be out for Chrome/Chromium by the end of the month or a newer update.

Cpus older than 5 years like Ivy Bridge will not get a microcode update from Intel, so be aware of that. That might change if the class action law suits are successful. All my systems are ivy Bridge  unfortunately.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Dell actually shows that some of their Ivy Bridge CPU laptops will get a bios patch (which I would assume means that Intel was patching Ivy).  I was looking and was VERY shocked that they show the E5430 as scheduled to get it mid-february.

Latitude E5270     1.18.6
Latitude E5430     2/7/2018
Latitude E5430 vPro     2/7/2018

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Thats really iffy right now as ive gotten nothing official from Dell in regards to a patch. Intel themselves said they will not be offering a patch to Ivy Bridge.

If youve got a link to the Dell info plays post it but I get directives from their support as I still do some servicing part time.

I would prefer the changes be made as bios updates but software patches are in the wild presently.

A link from here goes to here where they have the bios version listed for any of the supported models that has the patch, or the date it's expected to be released.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Just installed the A26 bios update with my Dell Optiplex 7010 and everything seems ok so far. Ill post back once ive used it more to test performance.

No bios yet for my E5410 and a short wait for the E5430 bios update.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Yeah, I've installed the updates on my E7470 and the E5470 that I just sold after updating.  The E7450 was SUPPOSED to originally release yesterday, but pushed back to tomorrow.  AT work, I've installed it on my Optiplex 7040 already.  Also, installed the update from Lenovo on the T450s.  So far, no issues with any of the updates.

No listing at all though for the E5410, a bit odd.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Not really, that's a nehelam processor.  I was shocked they're providing updates to Ivy Bridge era pc's, there's almost no chance they'd still provide an update for Nehelam.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

i3-370M is actually an arrandale processor but there was some rumors it would be patched and that came from Dell support.

Im surprised as well as I didnt think they would patch Ivy bridge but honestly Ive got a lot of cash in these units and Im not going to be able to sell them due to these issues.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Arrandale, Clarkdale, a bunch of others all just different sub-names for Nehalam when they gave out it seems like millions of different names for the same architecture based on what system it was for.

I'm still waiting for patches on my Acer (Apollo Lake, so current generation), and would honestly be surprised to get a patch for the Ivy Bridge Lenovo that is my q4os machine.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Most of my laptops arent Ivy Bridge so Im screwed, but Ive got too much cash invested to throw them away and go buy other hardware.

Ill have to think it over, but I wonder if this is what everyone wanted, people upgrading to avoid the issue.

Yes Arrandale is based on Nehalem but there are differences.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Yeah, there's differences to their various sub-architectures back then, but I stopped trying to pay attention after about the Core2 was released.  They would rename it too many things for me to care and I just took to remembering the actual architecture codename, and ignored all the "we added 1 MB l2 cache, lets call it a different architecture codename" stuff.

I think to an extent at least MS wanted this.  With how pathetic cpu improvements were for the last several generations; other than efficiency can you BARELY tell the difference between the Ivy Bridge and a brand new Kaby Lake in terms of processing power (NOT Kaby Lake refresh...those you definitely can...thank you AMD for forcing them to finally actually improve the cpu by more than 4-6% generation over generation)?

Everyone else, I know the major players certainly won't complain...but not sure if they were really hoping for something like this.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Intel claims the software patches are enough for most users, even though many oems are offering bios updates as well.

Im not getting rid of hardware that easily without a fight.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Was updating MX Linux 17 and noticed a Intel microcode update being installed. Checked it and then went over to Intels site and indeed its a microcode update for the i3 370m processor among others.  Gives me some hope my older laptops will be ok down the road.

Ive already completed over 20 bios updates on dell systems so far so its been a bit of a trudge trying to secure systems.

Re: Spectre and meltdown- What you need to know going forward

Ive done another 20 systems in regards to software patches.  Ive never had so many people call me about an issue in quite awhile.

Queried the IT department at my management company as they havent done anything with our systems so far and it never goes well when a maintenance manager gets on the IT guys case.

Agreed - strangely we all appeared to have survived up until some script-kiddie hacked sheself - now apparently we are all doomed to purgatory, for eternity
Received several Q4OS updates, including a kernel, so presume we are good to go ... once our beloved MS Patch Tuesday runs, Gates will go back to India
I might start another one called Nothing Burger - stay well, keep up the good work
