Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

I built a Q4OS Live USB Stick from ISO.

It boots just fine. However I cannot figure out
how to connect to WIFI.

An online post says to use the Network function
in the Taskbar (windows terminology) but there
is no such item.

Help please. Thank you.

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

knetworkmanager tool is already available but you may need to install network manager from the Q4OS software center.

There should be an icon in the bottom right corner of the task bar next to the sound icon if a device is recognized.

You can also find TDEnetworkmanager under programs/accesories/system  or look under settings/control panel/internet & network

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

On the live-cd (64 bit at least) the network icon is a small blue globe and changes to green when connected, there were a few issues a while back but my recent use of the image shows that it seems to be fixed. If you are still having problems connecting post back here as there is an alternative way. smile

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

Q4OS ia quite amazing as Ive never had any wifi issues and Ive used a huge variety of external and internal devices.

Popped in a USB wifi device last night with the live cd(32/64bit) and had no issues connecting with my Comcast gateway. This wifi USB device is problematic for many distros but not for Q4OS.

Assuming the wifi is turned on with your device, Q4OS should have spotted it right away.

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

I've had lots of issues with tdenetworkmanager.  However the network manager from software installer I've never had issues with.

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

Thats why I suggested network manager to him as its a great fallback for some types of hardware.

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

@C1Steve
We can also recommend you to run the plain network manager ui from terminal:
$ nmtui
The NetworkManager text user interface tool, 'nmtui', provides a user interface to configure networking by controlling NetworkManager.

That's the alternative way I was going to suggest if the icon really is missing from the system-tray. smile

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

Didnt overlook a thing Dai, Im well aware hes running a live USB stick but most people typically have hard connections from their modems or routers USB/ethernet(he didnt say he didnt have an alternative connection).  He can then test with the live USB stick and see if the network manager will work on his system(but now he has multiple options).
I have Comcast and the wifi and hard connection are available in my Gateway.

I wish he had mentioned what model of system, probably a laptop, hes using, so we can find out what wifi chipset hes using, as it could be a driver issue with the card/chipset.

Ive got two really unique USB wifi devices that are always an issue with many distros but they are recognized easily in Q4OS.
All my Atheros and Broadcom wifi chipsets that use to be an issue also work fine.

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

I only have one device that doesn't work without a github version of the firmware but there's not really anything that could be done currently to prevent that, but I haven't tried in a while so it is possible a kernel update may have fixed the issue...
I guess it would be helpful if C1Steve let us know a few details though to stop us all guessing eh big_smile

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

Maybe we need to start pushing for system model and specs in posts.  Many newer devices will require 4.11 or above kernel for support of wifi chipsets.

It could also be he needs to restart his wifi router/gateway to get it to work but rarely have I ever done that.

Scorpion does fine even with the much older network devices.

I think that would be going down the path of the Debian User Forum where people are often derided / ridiculed or often chastised for not providing full specs / searching every web page available / reading the entire Debian Wiki / and ultimately solving the issue themselves BEFORE posting in their forum, a feature I am VERY glad does not exist here. smile
At the end of the day I do believe that if you (we) want to help people we should give it without putting conditions upon it, many users (especially new ones) do not have the experience to know the best search terms for their problems and even if they do find a site with the exact information they need it is often put in a way that they cannot properly understand. Many times I have read posts (on other forums) where users have read the instructions for correcting an issue and when I read them they were as plain as the nose on my face (to me) but when I recall my early Linux days it would have been completely incomprehensible and would have left me felling rather stupid (and nobody likes that do they?).

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

Im not advocating getting aggressive in any way with new posters, just that we ask them initially for system model/specs to help them. Ive never been an advocate of what youre describing and after being a moderator for years over at Anandtech I wouldnt cooperate with such actions. Please dont misunderstand my comments but it really helps knowing the hardware versus all the guessing.

One of the biggest issues I have overall is the way newbies get treated online and the way many posters explain and show methods of fixing problems that newbies cant comprehend rather than keeping it simple when possible.

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

I wasn't having a dig at you CC, and I'm sure you wouldn't be like that, it's just that when we start imposing a "do this before posting" or something like that it is the first step to getting the type of behavior I mentioned. I don't think any of our current community are like that, but as Q4OS gains in popularity we will undoubtedly get users who could offer a lot of good advice but are less tolerable of new users and I wouldn't like to give them the ammunition.

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

Thats where a moderator eventually will be needed to educate and prevent people from overreacting.   Site rules and maintaining an open atmosphere arer a must as ive already had an experience where individuals took over a forum and destroyed it thru their attitudes.

Again all Im saying is when you and I get a post like this, we just ask for system specs/model.

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

No actually we dont as some threads comments go on for awhile before we even know what the system specs are, guessing as you put it.

I think its something we should do all the time when needed and as politely as possible.  smile

I guess we do but only when the problem isn't solved with the simpler fixes, but I do take your point and maybe we could ask for specs earlier. smile

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

The one thing that would make me leave this forum and Q4OS is to keep seeing a response of "Use Google! Google is your friend!" to every question.
I got sick of that at Vector Linux! Ya can't search for what you can't put into words! If you don't know what you are looking for then you probably don't know the question either.

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

I expect that more from users with some experience who will use Google to search out info on hardware or specific problems.

I dont disagree though with some forums that see huge numbers of the same basic questions and ask that you look at their faq or specific info thread first.  I wish we would post our documents/faqs in a thread here in the forums so people can look thru them for more basic issues.

Our forums right now are quite small so many of these issues havent cropped up yet and we handle them fairly quickly.  When i was at Anandtech we got thousands of posts a day and it wasnt practical to keep answering basic questions day after day. Having service threads, moderators and faqs helped quite a bit.

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

I agree CC. And I don't mind being told to look at the faqs along with a link. And if I have trouble understanding the faq then I can ask for clarification. But when NO information is given, just the google statement, then I look for another distro. Many times I had googled my problem, and gotten many answers, sometimes mutually exclusive of each other! Oh, I don't use google any more! smile

Re: Q4OS Live Stick WIFI connect

I use Google but it depends where you go for answers.  I look for links that are to well known forums with a lot of experience, usually associated with a particular distro.  My old Mepis community was one of the best.  There are many general sites that can offer a lot of experience with problems  lxer.com is like that.

Many help sites though are available and Google can help you find them like linux.org

I dont give up on distros if the forums are a problem, I just end up finding another forum thats similar with its distro and ask questions that typically get answered.
Debian users you see a lot over at the MXLinux forums asking questions.

The problems I had occurred about 15 years ago. Linux help has vastly improved since then. But the best help forum I have been on is this one!
