Trinity on GalliumOS...

So, been thinking about throwing trinity de on my GalliumOS machine.  I can't run q4os on that machine since it's GalliumOS (for those that aren't familiar, GalliumOS is Ubuntu with a patched kernel to be able to run on Chromebooks), and without the Gallium patches the sound doesn't work and the touchpad is flaky, at best.  But obviously since it's a chromebook (hp chromebook 14, N2940/4G/16G/7260 AC+BT/1080P 14", picked it up for $130) it's not exactly overpowered.  I'm running KDE plasma on it right now (defaults is a HIGHLY customized XFCE that I hated), and while performance is quite satisfactory, after getting used to q4os I'm thinking about putting Trinity on there to see if that can make it perform downright well.

Anyone ever used the base Trinity repos before?  I know q4os team does a LOT of patching to their Trinity implementation, and I want to know if I can expect a very q4os-like experience, or if the Trinity repos are more of a hot mess.

Thanks!

Re: Trinity on GalliumOS...

So, I went ahead and did this.  Here's my thoughts:

WAY faster than plasma.  Duh.
A bit more annoying to modify, as q4os implementation offers a more "base" installation from which to build your custom desktop, while the Trinity repos offer either install everything yourself, or install everything.
Not as many options in terms of menu implementations
Obviously, not as attractive of an implementation of Trinity as the q4os team has managed
Better integration of TDM with Trinity than the q4os implementation
Better integration of networkmanager with Trinity.

Overall, worth it just because it does run so much smoother with Trinity than plasma.  Would love to see a q4os version that has the galliumOS chrome patches.

Re: Trinity on GalliumOS...

Are the Gallium OS patches applied to kernel only, or are they applied to libc and other core libraries too ? It could be worth to try to install Q4OS Scorpion on the target device and just replace kernel and modules with the Gallium OS kernel.

Re: Trinity on GalliumOS...

I'm not sure.  I know the gallium kernel is patched with chromeOS patches for compatibility with the chromebook hardware (most notably the sound cards), and they use the chromeOS touchpad drivers.  Beyond that, I don't know if it's JUST those 2 things patched, or if it's further than that.  They don't have an actual forums, they use reddit as their "forum" of sorts.
