SOLVED - Accessing photos on Android phone from Q4OS Orion

This has been annoying me for some time and as discussed elsewhere has proved elusive.

In my case the phone is a Samsung A3 running Android 6

Various suggested solutions have not worked.

In short :-

robin@poppy:$ sudo mkdir /var/lib/usbmux

robin@poppy:$ sudo apt-get --no-install-recommends -t jessie-backports install gvfs-fuse gvfs-backends mtp-tools libmtp-runtime usbmuxd libusbmuxd-tools pcmanfm libimobiledevice4 libfm-tools

Yes I know some of these are called in from others but it took enough time to work out what was going to be useful.

At the heart of all this is pcmanfm which will work with gvfs-fuse to allow access to the Android 6 phone and SD card.

Once you've installed this lot the trick is to open pcmanfm
Plug in the phone, tap allow to allow access
You get the Konqueror pop ups to allow access - ignore those - you'll also get a different one which has come via pcmanfm - click OK to that and you'll see the phone mounted in pcmanfm - with mtp.

While that is mounted you'll find that accessing My Computer>Storage Media will return a blank - but the point is to get to the pics on the phone!

Once copied you can just unmount via right click in pcmanfm and off you go!!!!!

As discussed in another thread, you can also just install gmtp. Seems to have worked for everyone who's tried it.

As I mentioned in that thread gmtp did not work on Android 6 (no raw device error) - fine on HTC510 with Android 4.4.x
Neither did jmtpfs
Essentially the phone will not mount on either of my Orion based systems - full stop.

This solution, offered purely in the spirit of helpful information, does work - for me - and may help others who have quietly just given up.
