Problems after restoring Q4OS using Clonezilla Live

Good day!
I used Clonezilla Live to restore my Q4OS today. Restored the whole sda disk from image.
The data partitions restored well, but with disk structure there were problems. First I got a message that Clonezilla Failed to install grub:

http://storage1.static.itmages.ru/i/16/ … ef5e41.jpg
Luckily Q4OS booted, but with 90 seconds delay.
Next, I have found, that Clonezilla did not restored SWAP partition, so I had to recreate it manually.

Now I have problem with 90 second delay on every system reboot.

Please help, because ability to restore OS using Clonezilla Live is very important for me!
P.S. I have been using Clonezilla several times for restoring Linux Ubuntu and Linux Mint, and everything worked perfectly...

Re: Problems after restoring Q4OS using Clonezilla Live

90 second delay can be sorted out by setting the correct UUID for swap in fstab I have posted here about it.

Re: Problems after restoring Q4OS using Clonezilla Live

Thank you, Dai! It helped! But I still wonder, why Clonezilla could not install GRUB and did not restored SWAP partition properly... Q4OS is based on Debian, Debian is one of the most popular distributions... Besides on Ubuntu and Mint everything worked very well...Very strange...

Re: Problems after restoring Q4OS using Clonezilla Live

You're welcome Rademes, I'm afraid I can't help with Clonezilla as I've never used it (or anything like it) as I find it just as quick to do a fresh install. I know bobby uses a program called systemback which can do similar things to clonezilla, it can also create a live-cd from a working system, but again I can't vouch for whether it would be any better than Clonezilla. And yes very strange indeed...

Re: Problems after restoring Q4OS using Clonezilla Live

When you clone a drive with clonezilla there are checkboxes that relate to grub - not sure about swap as it's many years since I last used it.

I use mix of systemback for OS and Backintime for data.

Systemback is brilliant for the operating systems, but does not cut the mustard for user's home data due to file type and size limitations. I use it to create an install iso so can always get back to a known good point if needed. It can be done at teh same time as creating  restore point so it's just a couple of clicks........

As I figured out, Systemback is available only for Ubuntu based distributions. You need to add Ubuntu repository in order to install it.

Re: Problems after restoring Q4OS using Clonezilla Live

https://sourceforge.net/projects/system … z/download

From enclosed Readme

This Install Pack contains the Systemback Debian installation packages.
These packages are compatible with the following Linux distributions:
- Ubuntu 14.04.X LTS (Trusty Tahr)
- Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet)
- Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf)
- Ubuntu 16.04.X LTS (Xenial Xerus)
- Debian 8.0 (Jessie)

To install the program just run the 'install.sh' installer script with root privileges in terminal, like this:

sudo ./install.sh

or

sudo sh install.sh

Re: Problems after restoring Q4OS using Clonezilla Live

Thank you, but I decided to deal with Clonezilla first, I think I have found the problem solution.

Re: Problems after restoring Q4OS using Clonezilla Live

Tested Systemback, and it works very well. I think I will use it instead of Clonezilla.
The only one drawback is, that Systemback does not offer any integrity check before installing OS from created Live USB. So it is better to write images either on DVD or on SD-Card, to be sure, that data could not be accidentally damaged during Live system usage.
https://sourceforge.net/p/systemback/di … t=100#ce4d
Now the question. To update Systemback, do I need to uninstall the old package before installing the new one or I can simply download new .tar.xz package, unpack it and run install.sh?

Re: Problems after restoring Q4OS using Clonezilla Live

As far as I can see 1.8.300 is the latest version which I am running so I cannot be 100% sure. However, in this type of situation normally you'd just run the new installer and it will overwrite older files. What I don't know is if that would impact recovery - eg backup in v1 restore with v2 - again normally this will work with any other software so no reason to suppose otherwise.

To give you an example of how good this software is:-
I set up Q4 on my machine as wanted including insatlling systemback.
Created a restore point - I always exclude all hidden/user data files from backup as it is much faster. I use different process to backup user data and configs.

Next I ran Solydx live on USB, renamed my home/user folder on its own partition.
Then I ran installer for Solydx, formatting the root partition - therefore removing Q4OS completely
Fiddled about - installed stuff, etc etc.

Then, from the desktop I ran systemback, selected the Q4OS Restore point and hit Full System Restore
3 minutes later it finished. I rebooted and only had to rename the home/user folders to get back to my Q4 home stuff - just a number of different folders in /home partition.

All good - everything just works as it did before.
This is seriously impressive!!!!!!!!!!!

gtkhash may be a useful bit of software for your needs.
