I mean on your pc/laptop that you are doing the recording on?

it's showing no drop down boxes in the Device Toolbar,at all...

This PC has 2 CD burners in it...but only 1 outboard device in it..the cassette player. It's plugged into the blue input jack.Playback is heard thru the speakers.
Just not recording.

ok we are going round in circles a bit here, try this,

1.) start the tape playing
2.) connect lead from output of tape player to input (microphone) of pc/laptop
3.) start audacity and press the record button
4.) open k mixer select input tab and press the small button at the bottom
5.) check recording level
7.) if still nothing being recieved by audacity click the button again.

if still nothing and you are sure there is output from the tape player and you are connected into the right sockets then I would have to conclude a possible hardware issue. try these steps and see how you get on.

Did all and nothing.....when I open audacity, not one of the drop downs appear in the Device Toolbar.....must be a hardware issue....I give up...I'll try it on my other computer tomorrow. Thanks Dai,..I appreciate it..!

You're welcome, I don't get any drop-down menu's for input devices as I only have one, so that in itself isn't really an issue. Let us know if you manage to get it sorted though as it would be useful for future reference.

To me it almost sounds like a bad cable. If you have another cable, you may want to give it a try.
Or. wait a minute, you did say that when you play the tape you can hear it on the computer speakers, didn't you.
Well, there goes my thought for the day!

I hope you can get it working and let us know what you finally did to fix it!

Hello,everyone
Just wanted to let you know my trouble shooting results. First off,don't believe everything you read. The directions Audacity gives you for connecting it to your computer,doesn't work. It says to connect it to the BLUE input port...not the PINK port. Now,after Dai,said that, in the post to me,(about connecting to the mic port) I changed it. I was able then to get input,but can't adjust recording volume. Tried all the KMix settings,and STILL can't get any Audacity input settings to work. When I click on the microphone icon,nothing happens,even the arrows,beside it. After spending alot of time,with it, I got frustrated with it,and haven't messed with it since. I didn't try it on my older computer,just too frustrated. This setup shouldn't be this difficult,.... Ugh...!

It normally isn't this bad, and although you have had issues, connecting to the wrong port has been the biggest problem. I understand Audacity said a different port so you are not really to blame on that, maybe the audacity team could correct the documentation if it is wrong.
To adjust recording volume go to kmix and there should be a tab for input, adjust that to the required settings (and check it isn't muted) and you should be ready to go.

Did the KMix adjustment, doesn't seem to have any effect on the record level. It could be the hardware,but I doubt it. You're probably running much older gear than this machine. I'll explore it more when I have the time.

Just to let everyone know,... My older machine worked with Audacity...in the "input" port,,not the microphone port..so,my 04 machine must have some hardware issue. I got the songs downloaded that I wanted. So...all is good in audio world.... :-)

A bit late to the party with this, but I just checked audacity preferences and you can select the input there... screenshot attached Can't imagine you didn't look there, but I overlooked the obvious and thought maybe you did too.

Then you do not have any (working) audio input available... Almost definitely a hardware issue, but you could try the Scorpion(2.0.2) live-cd and see if the newer kernel might help, but as it is a relatively old system, it might not be any better...
Just read back through some of the posts and you said you had the audio playing through your speakers? was that directly connected to speakers or plugged into "line-in" with speakers on pc plugged into "audio out"?

It was plugged into the mic input...but it was all distorted sounding. I tried it in the input port,...but nothing

I can't figure this one out, if you can get sound from an input to an output there should be an input available in audacity...

I'm an audio engineer,by trade...how do you think I felt...? I finally gave up,and used my older machine. I was able to use the input port on it,and transferred the songs I wanted. After that, I burned them to a CD . What a pain.....
