Please let me know what other info as i have tried everything that i can find, and when going to system settings --> connections, i see all the wifi connections there but they are greyed out, i cannot connect, and cannot hit apply

You might just have hit the fn + key combination to switch off wireless.
Look for the wifi symbol on your keyboard - usually one of the fn keys and toggle that .e.g. fn + f8
If that makes no difference try sudo rfkill
That will produce a list.
If it shows wlan as blocked (either hard or soft) then sudo rfkill unblock the number in the list
e.g.
ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
0 bluetooth tpacpi_bluetooth_sw blocked unblocked
1 wlan phy0 unblocked unblocked
If I wanted to unblock the bluetooth I would do sudo rfkill unblock 0

A great suggestion as i am pretty sure it was something like that...However, i cannot find it on the keyboard..and this is what i get.............andrew@andrew-rog:~$ sudo rfkill
[sudo] password for andrew:
ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
0 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked
andrew@andrew-rog:~$ ^C
andrew@andrew-rog:~$ sudo rfkill unblock 1
rfkill: invalid identifier: 1

A quick search reveals that model fn + f2 is supposed to toggle it.
But in that case it would normally have been listed as hard blocked - it isn't in the list at all.
However, it is also configured in the BIOS so access the BIOS settings and check that the wifi controller is enabled - it is in the Advanced Mode tab.

The fn + f2 unfortunately has no effect, and the bios setting showed it was on, so i am kind of mystified....i would hate to reinstall as this might be the fourth time doing it...i am plugged in and may just leave it.. I dont understand why it has suddenly become unusable...it see it in the networks but everything is greyed out.
