Debian developers are planning to release a new stable version of Debian 13 Trixie on August 9th, see https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-a … 00003.html . Q4OS is heavily based on Debian, in fact it is Debian with a few added features and perks. So we will release a stable version of Q4OS 6 named Andromeda
at that time, just with a slight delay. Q4OS Andromeda will be a LTS release with 5 years of standard support and another 3 to 5 years of extended support.
The preliminary release date of Andromeda is set for September 6th September 12th, however it may change somehow due to bugs hunting and development. We will keep you updated on the final release date.

Nice.

Because we still need to fix a few bugs, we have postponed the release date to September 12th. The OP has been updated accordingly.

That's no fun at all. You should do what Ubuntu does and release it anyway then we can all post here to complain about it. ![]()

To be fair to all distros, there have been issues with many with new releases, including Debian. Id rather focus on everyone having a good experience with Linux, rather than singling out a particular distro for issues. It makes Q4OS look like a great place to be and hangout.

a new stable version of Debian 13 Trixie
Will the Andromeda release with Debian 13.1, or be updated to 13.1 later?

@vort3
Welcome
We are considering waiting for Trixie 13.1, we haven't decided yet.

Debian Trixie 13.1 is out https://www.debian.org/News/2025/20250906 , so the estimated release date for Q4OS-6 remains unchanged at September 12th.

Yes, exactly why I was asking about 13.1 earlier today! :-)

Good morning,
If I have installed the beta version of Andromeda can I use dist-upgrade for the new packages or I should re-install the Q4OS?

Since the UEFI booting issue is resolved in 13.1 I do hope you will use that as a base please.

Q4OS-6 Andromeda stable is quickly approaching. We have just released the first testing candidate version "r14-testing-rc" https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/files/testing/. Another release candidate may or may not follow. The final stable version will be released a few hours after the candidate passes QA.

As an aside, wow -- .iso size has roughly doubled since Aquarius!
Offline
Yes, they are larger mainly because they contain both Qt5 and Qt6 framework, Xorg as well as Wayland, newer kernel, etc..
1472M .. q4os-5.8-x64.r1.iso
2040M .. q4os-6.0-x64-plasma.r14-testing-rc.iso
1076M .. q4os-5.8-x64-tde.r1.iso
1727M .. q4os-6.0-x64-trinity.r14-testing-rc.iso
.. but far from doubled.
And still a half of Debian 13 KDE iso size ![]()
3936M .. debian-live-13.1.0-amd64-kde.iso
For comparison Debian 12 KDE:
3402M .. debian-live-12.11.0-amd64-kde.iso

Ahh, OK -- I think I see what happened -- the Andromeda testing CD is apparently live, and I was comparing it to the size of the Aquarius installation CD. Thanks for the clarification!

Previously I only used rolling release distro, so I'm not sure: when Andromeda is released, do I need to write .iso to USB and run update from that, or just run synaptic package manager and apply updates as usual, and get the latest version? This is going to be my first upgrade from one major OS version to another.
Offline
No. The iso are not usable to upgrade to a new version. They are for a fresh install only.
You can find threads on this forum on how to upgrade from one major version to another one (use the search tool), but this is strongly discouraged by Q4OS developers, for stability reasons.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find any threads.

I really hope I can upgrade though, I mean Q4OS is supposed to be stable Debian based distro AFAIK, and I would guess stable OS is supposed to be easily updated without issues.

Yes, we strongly recommend performing the regular Q4OS upgrades to get security fixes and keep the system up to date inline with Debian base.
