System was working fine on battery power until I started updates; something disconnected or wrecked the battery operations and system shut down. I plugged in charger and now it shows the battery icon as a red box 0%; it says it is charging, but no increase. I was able to complete download and install of all updates [a long list], but have no idea which might have impacted the battery function. I'm a Linux noob. Is it dangerous to leave charger connected while laptop shut off? It's an HP Mini 5103 and I installed Q4os Aquarius Debian.

Its more than likely a coincidence, as I use Q4OS on many laptops including recent updates with no issues. You're battery may have died, possibly a short which caused the shutdown. Plugging the charger in allowed the system to run but the battery is more than likely not going to charge. You could get a battery tester to check it but definitely open up the system and check the physical condition of the battery.
You didn't mention how old the battery is but Ive had a few batteries that have died while in use.
Go into the bios, usually F1 or F10 with HP(but could be different) and check the battery, to see of its charging and condition of the battery.
Most laptops tend to have those features.

It's not the updates that are to blame. We would also lean towards a hardware issue.
