Problems downloading software and language packages

Hello. My name is Gianluca, I installed Q4OS (Q4OS Aquarius, Trinity, i386 from the install-cd iso) yesterday. First time using Q4 and using a Debian-based distro.
I installed it in my main laptop, a 2006 Toshiba Satellite L35 that was originally running Windows 7 32bit.
Installation went completely fine, but some minor problems started to happen once I first booted into the operating system. It first asked me to download the Spanish lang pack, but it failed after two or three minutes trying with a "check internet connection" generic message.
Then I tried using the Desktop Profiler, with similar results (error 104). After trying [sudo apt update] a couple of times, and disconnecting and reconnecting the Wi-Fi, it finally let me use the profiler.
Rebooted, and had the exact same "no connection" problem again when trying to install Firefox from the Software Centre. I tried installing firefox-esr from the terminal and it did download it with no issues, though.
Does anyone know what the issue might be? Internet connection seems to work fine when using the web browser (albeit a bit slow but it is expected from a nearly 20 year old WiFi adapter) and when pinging deb.debian.org and q4os.org

Attached I will leave the output of inxi -Fxxxr

Re: Problems downloading software and language packages

Okay, after messing a bit with [sudo apt update] I noticed that it would not work most of the time but with a few exceptions. Then I decided to go to the two URLs that were failing [https //q4os-org/q4repo] and [https //q4os-org/qtderepo] (dots and colons replaced because the forum wouldn't allow me to put the repo urls) and they both show as a blank page with a text saying "page not available ..." when visited from a web browser. Then I decided to check the URL that didn't fail any time [http //deb-debian-org/debian] and it displayed the file index correctly.
Then I thought "maybe the Q4OS repo doesn't have the ability to be displayed in a web browser" so I decided to do wget on them and the following is the output of both:

giantoshiba35@q4os-desktop:~$ wget -p https://q4os.org/q4repo

I decided to check the forum after this and found out there were at least two people more that had connection issues, so maybe a server-side intermittent problem? I tried to wget the q4os URLs from my main PC running Linux Mint and got similar results.

Welcome to the forum smile

We didn't notice any intermittent failures of the Q4OS server. It works just smoothly. We guess the problem is with your wireless connection, or less likely somewhere on network path to the server. You could debug this path with "traceroute" command.

Would you post links to these topics please ?

The command you ran "wget -p https://q4os.org/q4repo" never works. You sould run instead:

wget -p https://q4os.org/qtderepo/dists/bookworm/main/binary-amd64/Packages

Re: Problems downloading software and language packages

Hello, thanks and thanks for the answer!
Okay, so yesterday after poking around for a bit I found out that the computer might actually be the one that holds the problem. When trying to install Wine from the winehq page with the commands required, I noticed the computer would not connect to the repository for Debian Bookworm. I decided to wget the winehq repo URL on both my main computer and the laptop and found out that it would work okay in my computer, but would not work in my laptop. I am currently writing this from my main computer, I will try the tutorial at

https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4698

as soon as possible.

-> Would you post links to these topics please ?

Sure, here are the topics I found yesterday

https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5356
https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5287
https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5331

I tried the [wget -p] you recommended me in the message (from my Linux Mint computer) and it does work correctly. Does this mean I have to update my laptop's sources.list? If so, what would be the correct URLs for it? Bear in mind my laptop is a 32bit system (Intel Celeron M440)

Re: Problems downloading software and language packages

With "the computer would not connect to the repository for Debian Bookworm" I mean that the SSL connection fails (GnuTLS: La conexión no se finalizó apropiadamente. No se pudo establecer la conexión SSL.)
No error details other than literally that.

No, the default sources.list is perfect.

It's caused by unreliable local network connection.

q4osteam wrote:

All the topics discusses problems with local network connection. It has nothing to do with Q4OS server. Q4OS servers are very robust and run just fine.

Re: Problems downloading software and language packages

Hello again!
After some search, some minor trial and error, I found out that [modprobe ath5k nohwcrypt=1] seems to make connections work as intended.
After running the command, I have tried wget-ing the WineHQ repo URL and works fine. I tried installing the codec libs and the missing lang-packs, apt update and upgrade, installing software from the Software Centre and Synaptic Manager, and everything works as intended!
Only thing I was not able to achieve though was wget-ing the qtderepo URL you provided me

giantoshiba35@q4os-desktop:~$

The URL was able to be wget-ed in my main Linux MInt computer. Then again, everything else related to repositories seem to work fine *for now*. Should I worry I am not able to wget said URL?

The tutorials I followed are at

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=867118
https://askubuntu.com/questions/93296/wi-fi-with-ath5k-bad-connections-after-idle

It's probably not the best solution, but at the same time it's probably amongst the few solutions available for (probably)-legacy (probably)-proprietary hardware.
Everything related to using internet like navigating and stuff seems to work fine as well (in fact I'm writing from the 2006 Toshiba itself at this moment) I even managed to connect to YouTube and "watch" a video (at 2 fps at most but such are the quirks of old hardware haha).

I guess that unless not being able to access that URL becomes a problem, and that nohwcrypt=1 is a terrible idea, this case is solved. big_smile
