Because of VirtualBox, switch to other kernel?

Hi,

as discussed elsewhere, 5.10.0-15-amd64, the current default kernel in Q4OS, is not a good choice if you want to run Windows 10 (and maybe others) in that OS under VirtualBox.

As I could read here, Q4OS supports using the latest linux kernel. As I suppose this means the very latest, and possibly unstable kernel, I was wondering if I could switch to another, "recommended" and somewhat "in between" / more stable kernel.

How would I do that? And how would I chose a "good" kernel version? How would I know when it's time to update / switch again?

Best,

t.

Re: Because of VirtualBox, switch to other kernel?

If the issue described on the MX forum also affects Q4OS then you could install the 5.16 kernel linux-image-5.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64 from backports. That is the last of the 5.16 range so will probably not see any updates.

You would need to install the headers linux-headers-5.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64

As it is a higher number it will automatically be used by GRUB.
If you enable the GRUB menu you can pick the kernel you want to boot from if any troubleshooting is required. Edit /etc/default/grub change these lines to:-
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

Save and then run sudo update-grub

You can then pick the Advanced line and select the kernel

You will need to enable backports in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/30_debian_backports.list (this can be done in Synaptic>Settings)
The syntax for installation is:-

sudo apt install -t bullseye-backports package-name

you can use the backport kernel in this way:

Tx, bin and judydudi. Will try that and report.
And Yes, I do actually have the problem with VBox 6 and W10 in Q4OS 'cause of 5.10.0-15.

Re: Because of VirtualBox, switch to other kernel?

Hi,

I have tried the tuxinit guide (refereing to bullseye bpo instead of buster, of course) as well as the one from Q4OS, both of which lead to an unbootable system due to nvidia. I get the message "Failed to insert module 'nvidia_drm': invalid argument" and X does not start up.

Is there a secondary step to be done for nvidia after "qinst-kernel-bpo"?

Best,

t.
