External DVD-RW (USB) does not auto-mounting

Good day!
I plugged through USB my external DVD-RW and inserted DVD with video. But for some reasons it is not auto-mounting as flash drive or removable HDD.
It is seen by hardware manager.
Is it possible to make it auto-mountable like USB flash drive?

Tested on another DVD discs, same thing. It is not auto-mounting. I need to mount it manually using gnome-disk-utility.

Re: External DVD-RW (USB) does not auto-mounting

Sorry, Q4OSTeam, but when I installed second OS (Astra Linux Common Edition) for testing, it damaged my GRUB, so I could not boot to Q4OS anymore. When I realized that Astra Linux sucks, I removed everything from my HDD. Now I am testing Linux Xubuntu because I realized, that for now Q4OS is the BEST OS for people, who want to learn and explore Linux, but it is definitely NOT for novice users.
I have been using Linux Mint for two years before installed Q4OS, and when I started to work with Q4OS I felt like complete NOOB! So I had to ask questions in forum, and do a lot of settings manually, some of them could be changed only by editing configuration files or using terminal. I simply cannot imagine my father, who had never seen Linux before working in terminal...or my wife...or my friend-gamer...
Nevertheless it was GREAT time using Q4OS! I have learned a lot about Linux past two months, maybe even more than a whole year before, so I would like to thank all Q4OS community for their help, especially bobby, Dai and crosscourt, and of course Q4OSTeam for VERY fast responses and complete, understandable answers!
Still I must note that it is a lot of work should be done, so I wish you GOOD LUCK and do not, DO NOT stop your project!
P.S. If I used Linux only on my PC, I would definitely stay on Q4OS. The truth is, that I have to install Linux on other computers for people, who had never used Linux before.
P.P.S This topic can be closed...but I will return later smile

Re: External DVD-RW (USB) does not auto-mounting

@Rademes
Thank you, we could improve Q4OS in the last few months, thanks to your contributions too. Could you name the main deal breaker for you and novice users, if possible ?

Q4OS needs a lot of work, we know. We are searching for a business partner for us to enable moving Q4OS development at the higher level. Again, thank you for your contributions.

Mint isnt perfect though and there are issues there as well depending on your hardware and choice of desktop.

Every Linux distributive has issues, but using Linux Mint for two years I never ever had to write on support forum or report bugs. Everything I needed was already solved and answers were ready. Using Q4OS I had to ask for support several times. Also unfortunately, Trinity interface still contains many unresolved bugs, just look at their Bugzilla. Also it is being developed very slowly. It is not Q4OS team fault but definitely affects quality of Q4OS operating system. Frankly speaking, I do not believe that trinity interface development will last for more than two years... Look at distrowatch.com! Only two Linux distributions are based on Trinity interface... From more than 100 only two! Timothy Pearson will say "Enough I am tired on it!" and that`s all! Goodbye Trinity! Sweet memories! May be I am too negative, but I already had similar experience, but that is another story...

crosscourt wrote:

To give you an example, Mint doesn’t see my wifi card during install but Q4OS does and installs it immediately.

But Q4OS refuses to mount disks in my USB DVD-RW (Samsung Writemaster). Again Issues with hardware can be everywhere.

crosscourt wrote:

Most of my charity senior users and clients find Q4OS very easy to use and most are newbies.

Still I think that for now, Q4OS is NOT for novice users. A lot of settings should be done by editing configuration files or using terminal. Even changing Firefox fonts or editing Start menu.

crosscourt wrote:

If you like XFCE you might give Linux Lite 2.8 a look as its as easy to use as Mint.

Thank you! But I am using Xubuntu now. I don`t need distribution for VERY old PC`s. Just fast and easy distribution.
P.S. Personally I think, that Q4OS team should make XFCE as default desktop environment for Q4OS, because I do NOT see a future of Trinity.

I`ve been using Xubuntu for only 10 days, and already think about returning to Q4OS. Your Q4OS definitely is better!

Re: External DVD-RW (USB) does not auto-mounting

Sorry, but I need to resume this topic. Installed Q4OS again and my external DVD-RW still refuses to mount at all!

Can you see and mount your DVD writer from My Computer -> Storage media ?

No, I can not see it there, and even when I try to mount it using Hardware Device Manager, it still does not shown in file manager.

My DVD-RW model:
s_1457258388_7416344_aafdc2506b.jpg
The thing is, that it mounts automatically without any problems on Linux Mint, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, and even on pure Debian Live!
s_1457258423_2245858_90b45fd693.jpg
Only Q4OS refuses to mount it...

Update:
I was able to mount it only using terminal:
$ sudo mkdir /media/denis/DD
$ sudo mount /dev/sr1 /media/denis/DD
mount: /dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only

Re: External DVD-RW (USB) does not auto-mounting

Hi Rademes, I don't have an external drive to be able to test, but does it make a difference if the drive is plugged in before you start machine? I recall a problem I had some time ago (and with another distro) and a device would only be recognised correctly if it were plugged in before booting up.
I know one workaround is to create a udev rule to connect device, but probably best to find root of problem first (if possible).

Hi Dai!
No, it does not make any difference. I tried already.

Re: External DVD-RW (USB) does not auto-mounting

The only thing I can think of then would be a udev rule, they can be a little tricky to get right, but once working it would pick up your external drive and disks (once inserted) I know TDE has issues with Udisks2 so it might have something to do with that. Maybe q40s team would have another solution??
One other question, when you connect the drive is it seen by the system?, can be listed by typing "lsusb" on command line?

Re: External DVD-RW (USB) does not auto-mounting

It could be down to a specific firmware call not being translated properly, there's a thought, @Rademes have you tried a 2.0.2 live-cd to see if that picks it up? It uses a newer kernel which might help.

Re: External DVD-RW (USB) does not auto-mounting

No. I have not tried 2.0.2 live cd. My drive is released in year 2007, so I don`t think it is old kernel issue.

Re: External DVD-RW (USB) does not auto-mounting

I tend to stick to the kernel shipped with os, and accept upgades when offered, it saves going down too many routes with troubleshooting when something doesn't work properly.

Re: External DVD-RW (USB) does not auto-mounting

Some news!
I installed LXQt desktop interface on Q4OS and in LXQt session my DVD-RW started to work!
s_1457286634_7470674_f8934810c2.png
A bit strange but works. Installed a printer driver from DVD.

Looks like again Trinity bug...almost all bugs I have found in Q4OS are Trinity bugs...
