Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

So, been just sticking with GalliumOS on my chromebooks (I have 2 Chells, 1 m5 the other m7) for a while.  Really wanted to have Trinity on the m5 one, so finally yesterday went through and properly learned how to get the sound working on them in Debian.  I now have my m5 chell up and running with q4os with all hardware working.  Just celebrating.

Very nice.   I cant bring myself to use Trinity after using KDE for so long.

Re: Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

For me, Trinity is honestly the 2nd best DE after KDE Plasma.  So I'll use it in preference to Mate, Cinnamon, XFCE, LXDE, LXQT.  Far superior functionally to any of those IMO.  No, nowhere near as nice as Plasma, but on something pretty low spec like this (Core M, so 4.5-watt), while Plasma does run absolutely fine, this runs FANTASTICALLY fast.

Re: Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

My second choice would be XFCE not Trinity as Trinity still has too many issues for my taste. Im on KDE most of the time these days. I also like Mate but havent used it recently.

Re: Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

I don't have any issue on Trinity anymore, and XFCE is missing too many of the features I like.  For me, it's no contest...XFCE isn't even out of the gate as Trinity is passing the finish line.  XFCE just too limited in it's features, I don't like it at all.

Re: Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

Well, after a few months of being listed on Craigslist, my m5 Chromebook that I was using for Q4OS has been sold (with Q4OS on it).  So I'm converting my OTHER Chomebook 13 G1 to Q4OS, which is a M7 w/ 16 GB ram.  Yes, I bought multiple (basically) identical laptops, I found them cheap on Ebay missing just a power adapter, and since they use USB-C, you can get them cheap.

So be interesting if I'll actually be able to feel the difference between the 2.  With KDE you defintely could, it ran acceptably but definitely was hesitant when doing some things on the m5 machine (probably due to ram since the m5 & m7 are mostly identical other than max burst frequency).  Of course Trinity didn't have any of those issues, so I have a feeling that it'll feel the same as the m5.  But will find out shortly!!

Re: Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

Ive run KDE Neon on an older Dell V130 with just 2gb of ram and a 2.4ghz i3 and it ran great.

Speaking to our DE discussion, Id actually use Mate before I would use XFCE as it is a bit more feature rich and is very customizable, before I would use Trinity.
I do want to try Trinity though with Q4OS Quark as that might be an interesting experience.

Re: Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

Eh, while Mate does have a usable menu, it's still well below Trinity in my opinion so far.  Not as easy to look good, and the menu is a little wonky in how it's set up.  So it's a #3 choice unless they improve it.  XFCE is still tied with many other choices for "no, just plain no.  I'd rather use my abacus."  It's just toooooooooooooooooooooooooo awful to me.

I dont have any DEs that I hate. Some that disappoint me, some harder to use than others but nothing that I would call awful.

Re: Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

I consider anything that doesn't have a usable menu in it to be awful.  So Gnome & XFCE are the big 2.

Re: Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

Most DEs you can usually customize the menu and in some cases even replace it but rarely is a menu so bad that its completely unusable. Ive used such a variety of DEs in over 10 years with so many different styles I see different but never awful/unusable.

Re: Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

Gnome & XFCE have no usable menus as far as I'm concerned.  They only have hideous things that I won't touch.

If there were words stronger than awful without cussing, I would call XFCE & Gnome menus such.  They are, IMO, utterly, horribly, dispicably unusable garbage without a single positive trait.  Absolutely the very definition of useless garbage.

Re: Yay, I no longer need to use Gallium OS!!

Got it pretty much done configuring.  Far more done to this one since the m5 Chromebook had only been purchased to test things and then sell, while this one was purchased to actually keep to use...

It's the same one I am using on my Mate test VM...intentionally.  Although don't think I've ever used it before.  That is my all-time ultimate dream car.  1987 Ferrari F40 5-speed.  With the engine being a stressed member, you can feel EVERY SINGLE REVOLUTION of the crank through your entire butt.  Will never mange to afford one, but if I were to win the near or past 100-million lotto, that would be one of the first things I bought, is one of those cars (although preferably yellow).

What chip is the C720?  Is it just the sound that doesn't work?

So far on my C720 it's just the top row of keys on the keyboard [brightness and sound] and the extra gestures on the touch pad. The sound and webcam work fine. I haven't tested the mic yet.

I actually disable all that, I prefer them to act as F-keys.  I hate the "shortcut" keys.  So I can't be of much help there since that's literally the first thing I get rid of.
