Q4OS 1.8 Orion end-of-support and updates

From the downloads page:
https://q4os.org/downloads3.html

The end of life of 1.x branch is set to May 2020

Is there a *specific* date in May 2020?

From what I understand, it's the last version that works with i586 processors such as the AMD K-6. So I'm inclined to grab it, along with all the updates, while they're still available. Thanks! smile

No, Q4OS Centaurus as well as Scorpion support i586 architectures too.

The exact end of support date is not determined yet, but likely Monday 11th. May.

Here's where I got that info:
https://www.debian.org/releases/stretch … ew.en.html

Chapter 2. What's new in Debian 9

The 32-bit PC support (known as the Debian architecture i386 ) now no longer covers a plain i586 processor. The new baseline is the i686, although some i586 processors (e.g. the “AMD Geode”) will remain supported.

Isn't Q4OS Scorpion basically Debian 9 / Stretch with a different interface?

@detoo
Yes, you are right. We have muddled 586/686, sorry for the misinformation.

Re: Q4OS 1.8 Orion end-of-support and updates

OK, found this over here:
https://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/

Debian 8 has been superseded by Debian 9 ("stretch"). Regular security support updates have been discontinued as of June 17th, 2018.

Jessie also benefits from Long Term Support (LTS) until the end of June 2020.

(Bold added for emphasis.) Do you know if, in general, Debian updates are promptly removed at the end-of-support date? Or do they still remain available with apt-get for a while after the updates end? I'm not familiar with how Debian typically handles this. Thanks.

Re: Q4OS 1.8 Orion end-of-support and updates

After a Debian version has reached EOL (end of life), its repositories go to the Debian archive. Therefore we can use this archive to get packages for our distribution ... see https://www.howtoforge.com/using-old-de … urces.list

Re: Q4OS 1.8 Orion end-of-support and updates

Will Q4OS Orion still be available on the legacy downloads page after the EOL date? And if so, for how long? Thanks again.

It should be available in the archive section at our SourceForge directory for some time, however we recommend you to make a copy for sure.

As of this date Q4OS Orion / Debian 8 Jessie updates still haven't been removed from the main directory. However, I had to jump through a few hoops to get them.

Q4OS 1.8 Orion is here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/f … s-1-orion/

I needed to manually download and then install the following packages from https://packages.debian.org/jessie/, in this order:
librtmp1_2.4+20150115.gita107cef-1+deb8u1_i386.deb
libssh2-1_1.4.3-4.1+deb8u6_i386.deb
libcurl3-gnutls_7.38.0-4+deb8u16_i386.deb
libapt-pkg4.12_1.0.9.8.6_i386.deb
apt-transport-https_1.0.9.8.6_i386.deb

...by using the following commands for each package:

sudo dpkg -i [package.deb]

I went with i386 builds because of my computer's architecture. Choose the appropriate build if your computer's architecture is different.

Then I replaced /etc/apt/sources.list.d/20_debian.list with this:

# Q4OS essential repository
# **** !!! NEVER touch this CRITICAL system file **** !!!

#deb http://archive.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
#deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

# jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
##deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free
##deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free

##deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-proposed-updates main contrib non-free
##deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-proposed-updates main contrib non-free

...and ran the following command:

sudo apt-get update

I was then able to download and install whatever I needed.

To get audio, I ran the following command:

sudo apt-get install pulseaudio

Everything was included; no need for the separate pavucontrol-qt package

Unfortunately, gufw firewall was broken -- gtk error - surprise! wink -- so I instead chose ufw, its command-line counterpart. It's still much easier to work with than the other GUI-based firewall software.
