Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

After spending some time with q4os, I closed the lid of my laptop while q4os was still ON. I had already customized the machine to go to sleep when the lid is closed. When I closed the lid I noticed the screen going blank as usual and the LED light that indicates the sleep mode was on.

[I used to do this with Windows if I am away for a short while. When I get back I open the lid and tap on the space bar or any key and Windows opened at the previous page almost at once]

When I opened the lid about a half hour later I couldn't make it come out of sleep mode. I tried pressing every possible key. As a last resort I tried the power button but the machine remained frozen. I had to call for help. The person who came tried various things for about 30 minutes (disconnecting and reconnecting power, removing and replacing battery, all the while pressing power button intermittently and for long periods (I guess this gives you an idea of what he did). Eventually the computer booted to open the Grub menu (not the page it was on when put to sleep).

Next we simulated what happened. Closed the lid on q4os to put the computer in sleep mode, and everything was a repetition of what happened before.

Can you help to resolve this please?

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

Yes, it is installed here (programs:/q4os-Programs/Accessories1/System/). I tried to open it but it refuses to open. There is about a dozen other programs here. Everyone of them can be opened except this one!

Theresa

Oh I just found another one that does not open - TDE Network Manager.

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

There is an AC plug symbol in the task bar. I have attached here what I get When I click on it. There is nothing there that can be set to my needs. I found TDEPowersave - Battery Monitor, in the menu in System but refuses to open.

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

I'll do all this and see how it turns out. If it is a hardware compatibility issue does it mean that I'll have to drop q4os and go in for another Distro?

Thanks

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

You don't need to reinstall anything. Simply click with the right mouse button to tdepowersave icon in the systemtray and run config dialog. Tdepowersave refuses to open from menu, as it's already running in the system tray.

Q4OS is configured to go to sleep mode on lid close by default, you have probably messed this configuration by setting it some way. How did you configure the lid close action ?

Sorry I said the wrong thing. I had configured this with Windows earlier. I forgot it was not relevant to q4os. I did not change any settings, not even opened TDEPowersaver before this happened. Didn't know how to! smile

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

Mine is a 2010 Laptop. I have not tried to close the lid with the system on because I did it twice and the laptop froze. I have to get my nerve up to try again without trying some solution first. If it happens to be a Hardware problem do you think I have to forgo q4os?

About power settings, not yet. I'll get to it tomorrow and post here. Thank you.

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

Sad result. Same thing happened again. When the lid closed the light that shows sleep mode was on. I opened the lid and tapped on a key. There is a very small noise that always comes from the computer when it comes out of sleep. This noise came. What happened after that was completely different to waking from sleep. It was like the computer starting from shutdown state. The fan started at full speed (fan runs at full speed only when the computer starts after being shut down. Never waking from sleep). The screen showed what it normally shows at the very beginning of start. The dark screen with a faint background light with a small white bar flashing at the top left. A few seconds of this and the screen went fully dark. Nothing happened after this except the fan kept going at full speed. After about 3 minutes I kept the power button pressed and the fan stopped. When I pressed the power button again fan started full speed like before and kept running with nothing on the screen. I did this many times and the same thing repeated. This is exactly what happened earlier before I re-installed q4os. What can I do next?

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

Because the q4os TDE default powersave settings are not working, the tech guy and I changed them to all available settings but no luck. In General settings>Button events: Power button, Lid close, Sleep button and Suspend to disk were all default set to Suspend to RAM. We tried all the settings available for Lid close button. When the lid was closed the LEDs displayed sleep mode or whatever else we selected. The tec guy says when the lid was opened and a key pressed it looked like the system woke up but the screen display was frozen with a faint baackground light. Because he set the Power button function to Shutdown (from default Suspend to RAM), we are now able to shut down the frozen state and restart normally with the power button, unlike earlier.

We also tried the power settings in live versions of linux mint and neptune on my laptop. There were no issues with sleep mode or any other power setting. From suspend, after openning the lid, pressing any key opened the OS immediately.

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

I can do a driver update if I know what drivers are concerned with TDE powersave settings.

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

We would recommend to test powersaving with Q4OS 2.0.2 'Scorpion' live CD. If it works well, you could consider to install it.

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

It works with 2.0.2! Checked both 32 bit and 64 bit. Sleep mode is perfect. As crosscourt says it runs very well. I am going to install it. My Toshiba laptop hardware is 64 bit. What would you recommend that I install. 32 or 64 bit version. I'll be installing the system in a partition of 100GB. How many GBs should I have for swap partition?

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

I generally use the same amount of swap as the ram installed, but you can use more if you think you need it, it really depends on how much memory you use. For instance if you use video editing software you would probably need to have a larger swapfile as this would use more resources generally speaking, but if you just surf the web, check emails and run a few smaller apps them a smaller swap would suffice. So it really depends on your usage. HTH

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

Yes 2.0.2 seems to have a life of it's own. Looks faster too.

I have 4GB of RAM, but still trying to decide about 32 or 64 bit. About Swap I play movies and Youtube but don't do any video editing or play games on the laptop.

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

I would recommend using 64bit and 4gb swap, at least that is what I would do.

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

I agree with dai and cc is correct too. Testing with the LiveCD 64bit and if all well, best to stay with 64bit.That's what I always do. I have not used Scorpion yet. When I get a quad-core machine to test it on I'll burn and play with it.

Re: Computer fail to wake from 'sleep' mode

Q4OS 2.0.2 'Scorpion' 64-bit installed successfully. The problem with sleep mode is solved.
